With over a decade of experience, Dr. Duncan has built a successful career in health care and psychotherapy. He has served as the chief executive officer of Better Outcomes Now since 2013, a software platform that implements the evidence-based Partners for Change Outcome Management System (PCOMS), which he developed. His work has validated PCOMS as an effective practice through eight randomized clinical trials, significantly improving psychotherapy outcomes and reducing dropouts. The system also identifies clients who are not benefiting from therapy, enabling alternative approaches for better results, with a focus on client direction and inclusion in treatment. His experience also includes directing The Heart and Soul of Change Project from 2009 to 2018, and he has made significant contributions as a practitioner, academician, and researcher. His notable works include “The Heart and Soul of Change: Delivering What Works in Therapy, 2nd Edition,” and co-authoring “Changing the Rules: A Client-Directed Approach to Therapy.”
In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Duncan was honored as one of the Top 10 Underreported Stories of 2000 by Project Censored and received the Menninger Writing Award for his book, “The Heart and Soul of Change.” Laying a solid educational foundation for his successes, he earned both his bachelor’s degree and PhD in clinical psychology from Wright State University, completing his doctorate at the School of Professional Psychology in 1984. He credits his success to his working-class upbringing and the values of hard work instilled by his parents. In the coming years, he plans to scale back his professional responsibilities to focus on writing projects, leisure, travel, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also aims to increase the visibility of Better Outcomes Now and is writing a memoir to share insights gained from over 17,000 hours of face-to-face client interaction and extensive clinical experience. His approach stands in contrast to profit-driven, private equity-invested systems, as he emphasizes a strong clinical background in his work.
