With many years of experience in law enforcement to his credit, Mr. Johnson has been fueled by his inimitable passion for public service. His career began after graduating from the Northeast Alabama Law Enforcement Academy in 2006, completing training that equipped him with many essential skills. Mr. Johnson subsequently worked as a patrol officer, enabling him to contribute immediately to his community’s safety and well-being.
Mr. Johnson’s exemplary work spoke for itself, as evident through his impressive advancement in his field. By 2008, he was designated as an investigating officer, helping to solve criminal cases and seek credible evidence that would lead to conviction. During this time, he exhibited dedication and keen investigative skills that were crucial to his professional development. In 2010, Mr. Johnson was appointed to the rank of shift sergeant, a post in which he refined his abilities as a team leader while managing the daily operations of his department and mentoring younger officers.
In 2011, Mr. Johnson obtained his certification from the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine’s Canine Performance Sciences program, which secured his expertise in canine handling. As a result, he served as a canine officer in 2011, a position that remains one of his career highlights. Mr. Johnson fondly recalls the close bond that he formed with his canine partner, as well as the invaluable contributions to law enforcement they made in tracking and detecting criminal activities.
While protecting and serving during this time, Mr. Johnson continued his formal academic efforts at Jacksonville State University, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2018. Soon thereafter, he found success as an investigation officer from 2018 to 2021 before accepting the position of interim chief of police with the Piedmont Police Department in 2021. Since 2021, Mr. Johnson has excelled as the chief of police for the Piedmont Police Department, a post that remains the pinnacle of his career in law enforcement.
In his present role, Mr. Johnson’s responsibilities extend to oversight of the entire police department, including patrol, investigations, and school resource management. He is also tasked with handling payroll, ensuring essential bills are paid, and preparing department orders. A major focus of his leadership is addressing community and internal complaints, collaborating with other departments within the city of Piedmont, and ensuring the efficient operation of the police force. Furthermore, he has exhibited great pride in his ability to effect positive change within the department’s culture, which has become more connected to the public and has garnered an improved reputation under his guidance. Likewise, Mr. Johnson has been a strong advocate for cooperation between the police and the local fire department and rescue squad, believing that teamwork in public services is crucial for the city’s future growth and safety.
Mr. Johnson’s stellar commitment to his department and community has been widely recognized in various local media outlets, including The Anniston Star, The Calhoun Journal, Coosa Valley News, Alabama Today, and Weisradio.com. His community involvement extends beyond law enforcement, as he volunteers locally and remains active as a member of the Alabama Association of Chiefs of Police. Moreover, Mr. Johnson was honorably tasked with presenting the Community Appreciation Award for the City of Piedmont and leading lockdown safety drills at Piedmont Elementary School.
Throughout his career, Mr. Johnson has attributed his success to his genuine concern for others and his desire to see people thrive. He finds much satisfaction in helping others overcome challenges and witnessing their personal growth. As a certified executive-level officer through Jacksonville State University’s Center for Best Practices in Law Enforcement, he continues to refine his leadership and administrative skills, especially in staffing matters,, managing emergency situations, and interacting with the media. His holistic approach to leadership combines practical law enforcement skills with strategic administrative oversight, positioning him as a forward-thinking and compassionate leader in law enforcement.
