Sandra M. Shirley-Auxilly, MBA, business consultant and mentor at The Competitiveness Company’s Jamaica Social Investment Fund project, and adjunct professor at the Jamaica Institute of Financial Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Jamaican financial services.
Having accrued nearly 50 years of experience, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly has become recognized as an esteemed figure in her field, with deep expertise in the realm of financial services in her home country of Jamaica. She currently holds the role of business consultant and mentor for The Competitiveness Company, with a particular focus on that organization’s Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) project. Through her work with The Competitiveness Company, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly contributes to efforts to fight poverty in Jamaica by working with small companies and providing training toward their success. Additionally, she educates the next generation of leaders as an adjunct professor at the Jamaica Institute of Financial Services (JIFS). Similarly to her role with The Competitiveness Company, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly’s efforts at the JIFS support the growing financial sector in Jamaica. She teaches courses on investment and liquidity risk management through which students can earn international certification.
Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly’s career started in 1975 when she joined Pannell Fitzpatrick & Co. as a semi-senior auditor for Jamaica. This was followed by tenures as a finance and accounting manager for Jamaica Bauxite Mining Limited, an operations accountant in cash control for PaineWebber & Co., and an account manager and assistant vice president of public utilities for Bankers Trust. In 1993, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly began a lengthy association with Sigma Unit Trust Managers Limited as a general manager and Sigma Investment Management Systems Limited as a managing director. Her guidance produced strong results for nearly a decade, leading to the group being sold and merged into Manufacturers Merchant Bank Ltd. Following this milestone, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly excelled in such positions as director and accounting manager at Edward Gayle & Co. Ltd., a senior research and teaching fellow at The University of the West Indies’ Mona School of Business and Management, and president of First Global Financial Services Limited.
Before beginning her prolific career, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly built a solid academic foundation. She graduated with honors from The University of the West Indies in 1975, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in management studies. Subsequently, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly earned a Master of Business Administration in finance and banking from the Lubin School of Business at Pace University in 1984. She further bolstered her expertise in finance by completing a postgraduate program in investment appraisal and risk analysis at Queen’s University in 2003. Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly has acquired numerous certifications, including in managerial leadership, strategic implementation, executive team dynamics, management of university-enterprise partnerships and transformational coaching. Committed to making education more accessible in the future, she consulted on the creation of the Jamaica Stock Exchange’s e-Campus, which provides professional training courses and workshops for those already active in or seeking to join the financial services world.
Long dedicated to civic advocacy, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly is deeply involved in multiple efforts to give back to the wider community. She offers her insight as a director for multiple branches of Victoria Mutual, an investment, insurance and wealth management company seeking to empower both individuals and small businesses in Jamaica. Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly has been an active member of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica since 2009. She contributed for nearly 20 years as a commissioner for the Anti-Dumping and Subsidies Commission and as a director of Independence Park Limited. During her time with Sigma Unit Trust Managers Limited, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly created the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run, a charity marathon. First held in 1999, this event is still being celebrated annually 25 years later; it’s considered the largest charity event in the Caribbean and has raised over $500 million in donations.
Beyond her career, Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly is a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She credits the success she has achieved to discipline, a focus on quality and the desire to be a pioneer as a woman in a male-dominated field. Mrs. Shirley-Auxilly’s accomplishments have been commemorated with several accolades, including the Jamaica 50 Award for Outstanding Contribution to Financial Services in Jamaica in 2012 and the Legacy Award in 2023.
