His experience also includes 22 years at Cushman Realty, a real estate firm specializing in brokerage services, including office leasing, building sales, and land assemblages, and six years in real estate in New York, NY. He is a member of the Houston Office Leasing Brokers Association, Houston Association of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, and the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors.
In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Cushman has been honored with the John Cushman Tenant Advisory Award from Cushman & Wakefield in 2024, the Landmark Lifetime Achievement Award from the Houston Business Journal in 2022, and the Howard W. Horne Legacy Award from the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks (NAIOP) in 2022. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of NAIOP in 2020, named Office Broker of the Year by the Houston Chapter of NAIOP in 2007, and recognized as the #1 Producing Office Broker Worldwide by Cushman & Wakefield in 2007. Additionally, he was inducted into the Heavy Hitters Hall of Fame by the Houston Association of Realtors Commercial Division and the Houston Business Journal in 2005, and he is an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Cushman has a diverse background spanning brokerage, office leasing, building sales, build-to-suits, land assemblages, and land sales. He spent 22 years with Cushman & Wakefield before departing. He co-owned Cushman Realty Corporation and played a pivotal role in its management, establishing the Houston office in 1971 and serving until 1978 when Cushman Realty was founded. During his 22-year tenure as chairman of the board, the company grew to encompass 198 employees across 11 offices, focusing significantly on commercial real estate and the development of multiple office buildings. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics, cum laude, from Amherst College in 1963, followed by a Master of Business Administration in finance and real estate from the University of Michigan in 1965. He attributes his success to his emphasis on documentation and the legal aspects of transactions. He learned from everyone, including lawyers, who, in turn, learned from him. When advising aspiring professionals, he stresses the importance of being a good listener.
