Title: Managing Director of United States Equity Cash Trading
Company: Barclays
Location: Ridgewood, New Jersey, United States

Michael Sherman Lewis, managing director of United States Equity Cash Trading at Barclays, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in finance.

With over two and a half decades of experience, Mr. Lewis has built a successful career in finance and investment services, specializing in cash equity, trading, and risk management. He currently serves as head of United States equity cash trading at Barclays Investment Bank, a role he has held since 2019, and as a managing director at Barclays Investment Bank since 2018. Barclays Investment Bank, a division of Barclays PLC, provides global advisory, financing, and risk management services to corporations, governments, and institutions. With a focus on sectors such as equity, debt, and mergers and acquisitions, it offers strategic financial solutions designed to drive sustainable growth for clients. His responsibilities include overseeing high-touch cash trading across North America, managing risk and internal capital, maintaining key relationships, and fostering team diversity.

Since 2012, Mr. Lewis has led a team focused on aligning equity trading floor verticals for optimal synergy. His prior experience includes serving as managing director at Morgan Stanley from 2006 to 2018, executive director at Bank of America Merrill Lynch from 2005 to 2006, and vice president at Lehman Brothers from 1998 to 2005. Laying a solid educational foundation, he pursued a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University, graduating in 1997.

Reflecting on his career path, Mr. Lewis initially resisted following in his father’s footsteps due to the pressures associated with the profession. Instead, he pursued his creative interests, excelling as a musician and artist, drawing inspiration from his grandfather’s artistic talents. His early career took him into advertising, where he began as an unpaid intern, despite contributing valuable ideas to ad campaigns. Financial constraints, however, began to limit his creative pursuits, and it was during this time that his father suggested he consider a more stable career path with an entry-level program offering a $50,000 annual salary. Attracted by the potential stability, he accepted the opportunity and ultimately discovered unexpected fulfillment in finance.

Mr. Lewis takes immense pride in his role as managing director, a position he has held since 2012. Initially, he managed part of the team at Morgan Stanley, eventually rising to lead the entire team. As a manager, he mastered key aspects of his role, from trading and risk management to understanding his team’s role in the broader equity trading floor. This included developing insights into how equity trading interacted with fixed-income trading and understanding how clients utilized these services. He also navigated the intersection of equity and fixed-income trading within banking and equity capital markets, overseeing processes essential to taking companies public. His team was instrumental in high-profile IPOs, such as those of Facebook and Uber, managing the first trades on various exchanges and setting opening prices. He attributes his success to a combination of extensive experience in risk management, in-depth industry knowledge, thorough training, and strong networking skills. Outside of his profession, he spends his free time playing guitar and drums, painting, and drawing.
