With more than three decades of experience in the arts and nonprofit sectors, Mr. Butler has established himself as a prominent figure in strategic planning, arts advocacy, management, and fundraising as the executive director of CNY Arts Inc., formerly known as the Cultural Resources Council, since 2008. His tenure in this position has been marked by his exceptional leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic when he secured $1 million in funding despite significant cuts in government support. Prior to his present post, he served as the executive director of Nyack Community Center from 1995 to 1998, the executive director at Creative Alternatives of New York from 1998 to 2003, the interim executive director at Appleseed Trust from 2004 to 2005, and the executive director of the Mental Health Association in Onondaga County from 2005 to 2008. Likewise, Mr. Butler was active as the director of programs and membership with the Alliance of Resident Theaters in New York City from 1989 to 1993, the director of public affairs for the Alliance of New York State Arts Councils from 1993 to 1995, and an adjunct instructor in arts administration at Le Moyne College from 2015 to 2019
A member of esteemed organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, Actors Equity Association, and the New York State Council for the Arts, Mr. Butler has supported his professional ambitions with a Bachelor of Arts in theater from the State University of New York at Oswego in 1985 and a Master of Arts in public administration from Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 2004. His stellar contributions to his field have been recognized with numerous accolades, such as a Lifetime Achievement Award from State University of New York at Oswego in 2019 and the International Telly Award Bronze in 2024. He has attributed his success to his passion for the arts and his incredibly strong work ethic, which was instilled in him by his family and his early experiences working for his grandmother. Looking toward the future, Mr. Butler hopes to ensure the long-term sustainability for CNY Arts Inc. while completing his writing projects, traveling in his spare time, and eventually shifting his attention to consulting and teaching on a full-time basis.
