With over a decade of experience, Ms. Mears has built a successful career in government and risk management. She currently serves as the director of the division of risk management for the State of Alaska, a role she has held since 2023. In this capacity, she manages insurance, claims, contracts, and loss mitigation through self-insurance and excess policies, overseeing property, aviation, marine, and workers’ compensation claims through TPA services. She reviews state contracts for risk reduction, manages a team of five, consults on liability, and trains adjusters on investigations and coverage determinations. Her experience also includes risk manager for the Municipality of Anchorage from 2019 to 2023, deputy risk manager from 2013 to 2019, and liability consultant and claims adjuster with Allstate Insurance Company from 1986 to 2013. She actively contributes to the State Risk and Insurance Management Association and The Institutes CPCU Society and serves as financial secretary for her local church. Laying a solid educational foundation, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in general management from California State University, Sacramento in 1985, holds a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation from The Institutes Knowledge Group, awarded in 2020, and an independent adjuster’s license from the State of Alaska Division of Insurance.
Reflecting on her path, after college, Ms. Mears pursued various career opportunities in fields like marketing and retail. A suggestion from her neighbor led her to apply for a position at Allstate, where her analytical skills shifted her focus to claims examination and investigation. She takes great pride in having safeguarded the State of Alaska from significant losses and earned her Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter designation in just one year. She attributes her success to her exceptional staff and their strong teamwork. In the coming years, she is dedicated to maintaining her current path and striving for excellence in her role, enhancing policies, and driving progress for the State of Alaska. Her goal is to leave the department well-positioned for future success when she passes on her responsibilities. Ultimately, she aspires to retire with pride in her contributions.
