Gregory Cmar, co-founder at Interval Data Systems, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in data collection.
With nearly five decades of experience, Mr. Cmar has built a distinguished career in data collection and automation. He is currently the co-founder and chief technology officer of Interval Data Systems (IDS), a role he has held since 2003. IDS is an automation consulting firm focused on ensuring that building automation systems consistently perform as designed. Their Smart Building Assurance Program™ covers every phase of a building’s lifecycle to optimize performance, comfort, energy efficiency, and maintenance. Utilizing their EnergyWitness™ analytics platform, IDS verifies and enhances building operations. In his position, he is an expert in onboarding new customers, setting up data systems, analyzing building data, and closely collaborating with clients to guide them through each step of the process.
Mr. Cmar’s experience also includes serving as director of product marketing at Circadian Software from 2002 to 2003, co-founder and director of engineering at ForPower Inc. from 1998 to 2002, and manager of engineering services at CONECO Corp, a subsidiary of Boston Edison, from 1993 to 1998. He also held roles as vice president at Enertech Systems Inc. from 1983 to 1993, TABS manager at Johnson Controls from 1981 to 1983, engineering service sales at Shooshanian Engineering Associates from 1980 to 1981, energy conservation specialist at the Massachusetts Energy Office from 1978 to 1980, and systems sales at Honeywell from 1975 to 1978. He is actively involved with the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers, including contributions to Guideline 36 and the Best Data Collection System. His educational background includes graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1971 and a Bachelor of Arts in communications from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1974.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Cmar takes great pride in transforming trend logs by digitizing them, removing the complexities of semantics. His innovative approach to data collection and reporting follows a two-step process. First, gathering the necessary data, and then customizing reports or timeframes based on needs, all while establishing a standardized database to support these functions. Over the years, he has also gained extensive experience in the HVAC industry, especially in system design, and has noted a significant gap in the effective use of data within building control systems. He also emphasizes the need to adapt to the evolving landscape of energy utility management in the coming years. Traditionally, utilities aimed to minimize the number of generators needed by managing peak loads monthly, which influenced rates. However, the challenge now requires a shift to managing load variations on a daily, even hourly basis across the grid. This shift highlights the growing demand for professionals with the expertise to optimize energy systems in this increasingly dynamic environment.
Mr. Cmar credits his success to his unwavering dedication to securing contracts and building lasting relationships with customers. Additionally, his investment in a trend blog has further strengthened his rapport with clients, while his managed control system consistently produces engaging trend logs. Looking to the future, as IDS strategically pivots toward new construction, the company is entering an exciting phase with a wealth of new business opportunities they eagerly embrace, and he is enthusiastic about expanding their services, confident that an automation consultant’s expertise can add substantial value to every project.
