Derek Bryson Park, PhD, Principal at Wilmington Capital, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in finance.
At Wilmington Capital, Dr. Park manages trusts, foundations and high net worth. He conducts his own in-depth research for investment management, preferring to rely on primary source materials such as financial statements and sector analyses. For him, this approach ensures a thorough and unbiased evaluation of investments. He has worked with Wilmington Capital since 2015, prior to which he served as the president of Mahler and Emerson Inc.’s investment banking arm for nearly 10 years.
In the financial services industry, Dr. Park boasts a significant career of over three decades. He spent approximately 20 years of this career as an investment banker at Lehman Brothers and its subsidiaries. While serving as a facilities manager for Live Nation Entertainment, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Western University in 1977 and began his career as an operations officer with The West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York. He continued his education at the New York University Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, graduating with a Master of Public Administration in 1979. He went on to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in international and developmental administration from New York University. In 2004, he was approached and invited to act as a junior ambassador for the Vatican at the United Nations (UN) for two years. The role evolved into responsibilities as the de facto chief financial officer of the Vatican’s embassy and involved meeting with cardinals across the United States to address financial issues related to lawsuits against the church. Representing the Vatican, he delivered a presentation at the United Nations General Assembly, a significant moment documented in the official archives of the UN. Because of this experience, he was inspired to pursue a postgraduate degree in theology from The General Theological Seminary, completing the program in 2007.
During his tenure as the acting chairman of the New York Industrial Development Agency (IDA), Dr. Park oversaw the funding of the structural extension of the New York Stock Exchange, the construction of two baseball stadiums known today as Citi Field and Times Square, the largest urban redevelopment project in United States history. He considers his most significant accomplishment to be his appointment as the director of the Federal Home Loan Bank by President Bill Clinton and extending his term into the administration of George W. Bush. In addition, he is proud to have been appointed as the director of operations at the prestigious U.S. Open Tennis Championships. Notably, he assumed this role at 19, a remarkably young age. Because of this impressive accomplishment, The New York Times featured articles about him, showcasing the magnitude of his responsibilities and the impact of his leadership within the realm of international sporting events.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Park seeks to sustain his employment on Wall Street, persist in his current undertakings and broaden his clientele base. He aims to continue his long-standing career in the dynamic field of financial services, and despite the inherent challenges and risks, including the high-stress levels that have affected many of his peers, he remains committed to his work.
