Mitchell L. Kilgo, executive partner for the federal region at Gartner Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in information technology.
With over a decade of experience, Mr. Kilgo has established a successful career in information technology and cybersecurity, specializing in tactical radios and satellites. Since 2023, he has served as an executive partner for the federal government region at Gartner Inc., where he provides strategic advice on digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and related areas to support the organization’s mission objectives. His prior roles include consultant at Deep Water Point & Associates from 2022 to 2023, deputy inspector general in the U.S. Army from 2021 to 2022, and commander of the Communications-Electronics Command in the U.S. Army from 2019 to 2022. He also held positions as chief information officer at U.S. Central Command from 2016 to 2019, commander of the 5th Signal Command from 2013 to 2014, and executive officer to the commanding general at U.S. Africa Command from 2012 to 2013.
In addition, Mr. Kilgo is involved with the Association of the United States Army, Army and Air Force Communications Electronics Organization, Sigma Pi Phi, and volunteers at local swim meets. He laid a solid educational foundation, earning a Bachelor of Science in math and natural science from Virginia Union University in 1988, a Master of Science in systems technology from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1995, a Master of Science in national security strategy from the National Defense University in 2009, and an honorary PhD from Virginia Union University. Reflecting on his path, he considers his most significant accomplishment to be achieving the rank of general officer in the military, a distinction earned by less than 1% of officers. His proudest professional moment was commanding Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, where he led the Army Communications-Electronics Command, managing around 10,000 personnel in critical global missions.
Mr. Kilgo attributes his success to his upbringing, focusing on the importance of strong fundamentals, a lesson his says was reinforced during his years playing football in junior high and college. He also credits his mentors, who offered advice and encouraging him to take on challenging roles. Additionally, he believes there is always more to achieve and values team development, recognizing that empowering his teams allows him to focus on strategic initiatives while entrusting day-to-day operations to capable leaders. In the coming years, he is focused on further developing his skills in the industrial sector, transitioning from his extensive military experience to gain a full understanding of the business landscape, including essential areas like profit and loss. A key goal for him is to educate himself on the intricacies of business processes and operations, areas not emphasized in his military background. He is also determined to progress within his company, aspiring to move up through the ranks with an eye on the executive partner role and eventually the position of vice president’s executive partner.
Mr. Kilgo advises future generations to adopt his motto, “Satisfaction is overrated; there’s almost always more to be done,” stressing that mastering one’s craft and supporting others’ success is key to individual and organizational achievement. He encourages young professionals to focus on equipping their teams with the necessary resources and fostering a collaborative environment, believing that supporting the success of others naturally leads to personal growth and achievement.
