Additionally, she has been a designated campus colleague at the University of Arizona since 2015. Her responsibilities include engaging in professional outreach and fostering collaborations with organizations such as InfraGard, a public-private partnership with the FBI, the Quantum Economic Development Consortium, and the IEEE. Her experience includes serving as a research analyst at Imprezzio Inc. in 2018 and as postdoctoral faculty at Washington State University from 2016 to 2017. Her academic roles include teacher’s laboratory assistant and physical chemistry grader at the University of Arizona from 2009 to 2012, adjunct faculty at Utah Tech University, and high school teacher at Desert Hills High School in 2015 and 2016. She has also worked as a chemistry operations consultant for NimbusWorks in 2015 and as a chemical laboratory specialist at Pima Community College in 2009.

Dr. Sharkey also contributes to the field a panelist for Chemical Marketing and Economics since 2022, peer article referee for the Institute of Physics since 2013, and panelist for the All Hazards Consortium in 2023. Her achievements include participation in the DAFITC Cybersecurity Futures Panel for the U.S. Department of the Air Force in 2022 and advisory roles for Pullman School District and Kiwanis International from 2017 to 2018. She has supported academic excellence as a scoring engineer and regional director for Math Is Cool and as a member of the High Performance Computing Technology Refresh Advisory Committee from 2013 to 2015, has had notable appearances at Quantum Business Europe in 2021, Quantum.Tech in Boston in 2019, and prestigious conferences like the Bulletin of the American Physical Society and the Molecular Quantum Mechanics Congress, as well as being published in over 30 professional journals.

Throughout her career, Dr. Sharkey has made significant contributions to quantum research, including advanced calculations of rotational states of diatomic molecules and the rovibrational spectrum of the H3+ molecule, projects she has pursued at the University of Arizona since 2012. Her achievements have earned her recognition as one of the 40 Under 40 Women in Cybersecurity by Cyber Express for 2023-2024 and the Integrity in Action award from IEEE in 2024. She was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow from 2012 to 2015 and received the Excellence in Undergraduate Research award from the University of Arizona in 2010. Earlier honors include being named a HyperCube Scholar in 2008 and Science Student of the Semester at Dixie State College in 2005, with her accomplishments beginning as a Sterling Scholar in science at Dixie High School in 2003. Looking to the future, she aims to transition from consultant to professor of practice, collaborating globally to enhance quantum-related education while continuing her consulting work to improve sustainability through quantum computing. Her ultimate goal is to revolutionize chemical processes by overcoming the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, with ambitions to make transformative contributions to science and potentially achieve Nobel Prize recognition.
