Ed McLaughlin, Co-founder at Predictive InSight, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in office equipment.
Mr. McLaughlin has held various positions within the office equipment industry since 1969, prior to which he served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He began as a sales representative with 3M Company before moving to Canon U.S.A. Inc., where he devised the company’s initial national account program. This program was subsequently promoted by the company and backed by dealers. Upon establishing himself, he assumed the presidency of a sales subsidiary in Philadelphia, where several innovative initiatives were undertaken. The subsidiary became a prominent channel partner for NeXT computers under Steve Jobs’ leadership, culminating in a close working relationship with Mr. Jobs and the development of various products. In addition to their copier sales, Canon was among those pioneering operations in transitioning into a service-oriented organization.
During his ten-year tenure as the president of the office equipment division at Sharp Electronics, Mr. McLaughlin successfully revitalized the division, steering it away from seven years of decline. This resurgence led to significant breakthroughs, particularly in developing intelligent multifunctional technology (MFT) for copiers. Despite initial industry skepticism, Sharp’s commitment to innovation resulted in establishing networking capabilities and customizable applications based on Open Systems Architecture. This transformation not only redefined the concept of multifunctional devices but also set new standards for digital workflow integration. These efforts reshaped the industry landscape, prompting widespread emulation within a year of their introduction. Of all his achievements, Mr. McLaughlin places the most value on his influence on the industry during his tenure at Sharp.
Within the office supply industry, Mr. McLaughlin’s expertise lies in his ability to transform organizations by improving their efficiency. He has a talent for transforming dysfunctional teams into flatter, more effective organizations, focusing on empowering fewer people to achieve more. Rather than adhering to specific management labels or frameworks, he focuses on solving the unique problems of each situation. In addition to his work with Canon and Sharp Electronics, he has served in executive positions at Valderus, Innovolt Inc. and Nexera, and he currently serves as an executive advisor for the Wellington Private Capital division of Wellington Management Company LLP. He received his education from LaSalle University, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1976.
In 2020, Mr. McLaughlin cofounded Predictive InSight, the only authorized Direct Insight distributor in North America. As a business owner, he remains energized and motivated to learn, and he credits his growth to self-confidence and trust in others. For him, the career journey is one of continuous learning, and he has strived to consistently surround himself with educated individuals, and as a result, these talented individuals have played a significant role in his own education and development. He remains current in his industry through active engagement and continuous learning, regularly reading industry-related materials and staying abreast of emerging trends as well as maintaining membership to organizations such as the Managed Print Services Association and the Business Technology Association. Outside of his accomplishments in business, he has performed approximately 15 times on Bob Egan Live! on YouTube and enjoy.
