With four decades of experience, Mr. Smith has established a successful career in construction, specializing in heavy and retro construction for power plants, refineries, chemical plants, and manufacturing facilities. He currently serves as the US regional director of construction at Fluor Corporation, a global engineering, procurement, and construction company, a position he has held since 2022. His extensive experience includes serving as construction director at McDermott International Ltd. from 2017 to 2022 and holding several leadership roles at Fluor Corporation, such as construction manager from 2016 to 2017, construction engineering manager from 2015 to 2016, and construction manager from 2012 to 2015. Prior to these roles, he was construction director at Day & Zimmermann from 2010 to 2012 and site manager at Mustang Engineering – Global Performance/PME from 2007 to 2010. Earlier in his career at Fluor Corporation, he held roles including construction engineering manager from 1998 to 1999 and 2000 to 2007, corporate construction coordinator from 2000 to 2002, and piping designer from 1989 to 1992. He began his career as a craft worker with Daniel Construction, Davis Electrical, and various contractors from 1984 to 1992.
Additionally, Mr. Smith served as director of the National Bareback Riding Hall of Fame from 2021 to 2022 and as a spokesman for the International Professional Rodeo Association from 2005 to 2013. His leadership roles also include vice president of the National Bull Riders Association from 2009 to 2011, board member of the Professional Bucking Bull Association from 2009 to 2011, director of the Southern Extreme Bull Riding Association from 2005 to 2008, and vice president of the Cowboy Artists and Photographers Society in 2004. He has also contributed to the industry as an author, with works including “Chris LeDoux Memorial Article” in American Cowboy Magazine in 2005, “Behind the Chutes with Tom Smith” in Pro Rodeo World Magazine in 2004, and various articles published in Humps and Horns and Bucking Stock Magazine.
Mr. Smith takes great pride in his professional and personal accomplishments, including assembling and managing a team for the Montgomery County Power Project, which was completed six months ahead of schedule with zero OSHA incidents, earning maximum bonuses for the company and team members. He also successfully managed an amateur bull riding association, growing its membership from 40 to 400 and its events from 20 to over 300 in a single year. In light of his impressive undertakings, he received the Fluor Silver Cross for Life Saving Actions in 2024, was named one of the Top 10 Construction Directors by Construction Business Review in 2023 and earned the Outstanding Spokesman for Rodeo award in 2013. Additional honors include recognition for improving amateur rodeo events in the Southeast, a Wrangler endorsement from 2006 to 2011, and credentials for the National Finals Rodeo from 2005 to 2009.
