As a senior risk manager at Builders Mutual Insurance Company, an insurance agency providing coverage to the construction industry, Mr. Blatter is responsible for conducting discussions with insurance policyholders, visiting job sites and training staff in various areas to elevate their safety awareness. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in engineering from Fairmont State College in 1989 and began his career as a consultant with Aetna Life and Casualty Co. In 1994, he joined the American Red Cross as a corporate loss control specialist, serving in this capacity for three years until he transitioned to working with Nationwide. Over his nearly 20-year tenure with the insurance company, he served as a loss control specialist. Seeking a rise in his career, he left Nationwide in 2019, when he was offered a position with his current employer, Builders Mutual Insurance Company.
Reflecting on his career, Mr. Blatter credits his achievements to the individuals he encountered on his journey, all of whom imparted valuable lessons he retains to this day. While at Aetna Life and Casualty Co., his boss and mentor advised him to learn something new every day, making his life more engaging. He continues to give credence to the advice of his high school shop teacher, who once told him, “Think harder, and you won’t have to work harder.” To pass on the teachings he has received and the lessons he has learned, he strives to mentor junior employees in the industry. He emphasizes the importance of continuously learning and believes in taking time to fully understand a situation before making recommendations. Whenever a team member requests another set of eyes on a project or requires training, he is glad to step in, sharing his knowledge about preventing accidents and fatalities.
Throughout his 35 years in the insurance field, Mr. Blatter has made key contributions to worker safety. He has dedicated his time and work to ensuring compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, aiding contractors in preventing accidents and safeguarding lives. At Builders Mutual Insurance Company, he and two colleagues serve as part of a committee facilitating open discussions with the engineering staff in collaboration with management to address field-related challenges. To remain abreast of developments in his field, he maintains membership to the American Society of Safety Professionals and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). While he is nearing retirement, he remains dedicated to continuing the vital work he has done in the insurance industry and plans to continue in his career for as long as possible. In his spare time, he is involved with the Lake Jackson-Mid County Lions Club, where he has been a member for over 20 years and served as a director, treasurer and president.
