Thomas N. Tyrrell, Managing Partner at CollaboRx LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the Nonprofit Sector.
Mr. Tyrrell, an established professional in the nonprofit sector, launched CollaborRx LLC in Brecksville, Ohio, as the organization’s managing partner. Launching the pro-bono nonprofit entity in 2010, CollaborRx LLC works to alleviate social determinants of health, especially for underserved populations. Since founding the organization, Mr. Tyrrell has also launched Nature for Health Collective as the founder and chief executive officer in Independence, Ohio, to help mitigate social drivers of health for underserved populations of students in grades pre-kindergarten through six.
Mr. Tyrrell’s role as a leading authority in this sector comes after founding the Great Lakes Biomimicry, a subsidiary of the Ohio Aerospace Institute in Cleveland, as its managing partner. This nonprofit existed from 2010 to 2018 to assist organizations in learning from nature and how to accelerate innovation.
Having formerly spent many years in the steel industry, Mr. Tyrrell began working as a sales loop trainee at Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1967, where he subsequently became a general product salesperson and product specialist. In 1978, he was acquired by Raritan River Steel in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, as the vice president of marketing. Mr. Tyrrell then became the chief executive officer of American Steel and Wire Corporation in Cuyahoga Heights, Ohio, from 1986 to 1994.
Over the next two decades, Mr. Tyrrell held positions with Birmingham Steel Corporation, Bar Technologies Inc. and Republic Engineered Steels. He also co-founded Segmint from 2007 to 2008, which worked with financial institutions and financial technology providers to help them understand and leverage data, interact with customers, and measure results more efficiently. Furthermore, Mr. Tyrrell was the chief executive officer of Republic Technologies International, a merger between USS/KOBE, Bar Technologies and Republic Engineered Steels in Akron, Ohio, from 1999 to 2000. Finally, from 2002 to 2020, he co-founded and served as a senior advisor and director at Glengary LLC in Cleveland, a venture capital company.
Highly educated, Mr. Tyrrell received a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts, business and English at Elmhurst University in 1076. He was honored with an Honorary Doctorate from Baldwin Wallace University in 1992.
Mr. Tyrrell is a professional member of several industry-related organizations, including the Wire Association International Inc., the American Wire Producers Association, and the American Institute of Steel Construction. He has also been highly engaged in civic commitments for over 40 years. Presently, he is active in various capacities with the Cleveland Leadership Center, the Sisters of Charity Health System, the Cleveland Zoological Society, the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, and the Trust for Public Land.
Among his most notable accomplishments during his over 30-year tenure in the steel industry, Mr. Tyrrell recalls his contributions to restarting American Steel & Wire Corp. in 1986. This plant had been shut down for two years, and he became instrumental in developing a team to restart it. In under 10 years, it became a leading manufacturing plant with over $350 million in annual sales.
Throughout his career, Mr. Tyrrell has contributed several professional articles to various publications. He has also been recognized with several accolades, including being named one of the 30 Difference Makers in Crain’s Cleveland Business 30th Anniversary Issue in 2010 and being admitted into the Passion Vista Magazine Hall of Fame in 2024.
Looking toward the future, Mr. Tyrrell intends to continue his nonprofit engagements. Since retiring, he has found continuous reward and value in his involvement, where he has utilized his business knowledge to give back and make a difference.
