Michael L. Mr. Carrube is a leader in the transportation sector, with a career history that dates back to 1989 when he worked as a conductor for the New York City Transit Authority. Subsequently, he became a union worker and became affiliated with the Transport Workers Union Local 100 in New York City as the acting vice president from 2000 to 2003. Mr. Carrube returned to the role of a conductor in 2003, where he remained for nearly two decades between 1989 and 2007 before pivoting into the role of supervisor. He also held the title of assistant train dispatcher from 2007 to 2025. Mr. Carrube was employed by the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) for 35 years.
Influenced by his family, many of whom worked for the union, including Mr. Carrube’s father, who was a working-class employee of the city and union member, he grew up in an environment surrounded by individuals who were affiliated with the transit, sanitation, fire, police and correctional departments. Because his family lacked the money to put him through college, he followed in the footsteps of those who came before him.
Today, Mr. Carrube remains active in the industry as the owner of Metro-City Safety LLC in New York City since 2009. As such, he provides his extensive expertise to clients regarding construction safety and high-rise construction.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Carrube received several significant professional credentials, making him highly qualified in his field. He holds site safety manager certification through the New York City Department of Buildings, construction fire safety manager certification through the New York City Fire Department, and construction superintendent certification through the New York City Department of Buildings. He also garnered Occupational Safety and Health Administration trainer certification.
Besides his successful tenure with the NYCTA, Mr. Carrube has received significant rewards from several industry-related organizations. Affiliated with the Subway-Surface Supervisors Association (SSSA) since 2010, he spent several years as the organization’s vice president before being elected president in 2015. In his leading role, Mr. Carrube has been instrumental in leveraging his expertise and ideas to support its members while overseeing a staff of over 40 elected officers and 15 hired staff members. Mr. Carrube is responsible for negotiating all contracts and serving as an organizer for bringing new groups into the union.
When Mr. Carrube first took over as president of the SSSA, he was critical in helping the United Center of Leadership Organization (UCLO). For the first time in New York City Transit’s history, its managers and superintendents were allowed to join or organize a union, and Mr. Carrube was the one to initiate it. They successfully formed the UCLO union via the Public Employment Relations Board.
In addition to his role at the SSSA, Mr. Carrube founded and serves as the international president of the National Association of Transportation Supervisors in Brooklyn, New York, where he has been instrumental in leading the renowned organization since 2018. As such, he collaborates with local presidents and addresses their various concerns.
In recognition of his success, Mr. Carrube received several accolades, including a Leaders of Labor Award and a Labor Power Players accolade from Schneps Media in 2023. He was also recognized with a Power Players in Transportation award from Schneps Media in 2024. Among other honors, Mr. Carrube was honored to receive recognition among the Labor Power 100 in 2021, 2022 and 2024 and a Transportation Power 100 in 2022, 2023 and 2024 from the City and State of New York.
