Ms. Young is a former teacher of over 30 years who has since retired from public school education. Since then, she has become dedicated to community service through her work with the Poland Lions Club of Lions Club International in Poland, Ohio. Having taught health and physical education to students, her tenure in education was marked by her commitment to student development and her passion for sports. Ms. Young also served as a coach at Poland Seminary High School, where she significantly impacted many children’s lives. Her dedication to education also extended beyond the classroom as she took on the role of supervisor of student teachers at Youngstown State University, guiding future educators in their professional journeys.
Since exiting the classroom, Ms. Young has drawn success as the membership chair for the Poland Lions Club. In this role, which she has held since 2023, she oversees membership activities and fosters community engagement. Ms. Young’s involvement with Lions Club International began when she was initially appointed as a zone chair and later as a district governor, overseeing over 50 clubs within the district.
Lions Club International has existed for over a century, working with communities to support those in need. Assisting hundreds of millions of individuals annually, the organization comprises approximately 1.4 million members across 49,000 clubs, including the Poland Lions Club, focusing on serving communities worldwide.
Among Ms. Young’s most recent accomplishments, she was influential in the Poland Lions Club delivering over 25 care packages to the Dorothy Day House in Youngstown, Ohio, in early April 2025, including drinks, snacks, socks and hygiene items. The Dorothy Day House is a homeless shelter that provides those experiencing homelessness with a place to shower, relax, enjoy an evening meal and acquire friendships.
Ms. Young’s academic foundation was laid at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1972. This educational background equipped her with the knowledge and skills necessary for a successful career in teaching and coaching. Ms. Young’s influence is evident as she takes pride in seeing former students achieve their goals and make an impact in their own professions.
In addition to her primary professional achievements, Ms. Young became involved in several industry-related organizations, including the National Education Association, the State Coaches Association, the Society of Health and Physical Educators, the Golf Coaches Association of America and the National Association of Sports Officials. These memberships enabled her to excel in her career and network with other industry leaders.
Besides her work with the Lions Club International, Ms. Young has contributed her time and expertise to several other civic-minded initiatives. She has been recognized for her humanitarian efforts with the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2013, the highest accolade distributed by Lions Club International and named after its founder, Melvin Jones. Ms. Young was also honored for her hard work and guidance with a Leadership Award from the organization in 2014.
Meanwhile, Ms. Young’s contributions to education and sports have been recognized through various awards and honors, including being named as the Teacher of the Year by the Poland Education Association in 2010 and again during the 2011-2012 academic year. Eager for the future, she hopes to continue influencing her community and beyond through her work in the nonprofit sector.
