From 2017 to 2021, Dr. Jett worked as the health commissioner for the Brookline Department of Health and Human Services in Massachusetts. During this tenure, he made significant strides in public health policy, notably implementing the nation’s first mask mandate in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This pioneering effort set a precedent for similar mandates across the state, contributing to a significant reduction in virus transmission.

Prior to his tenure in Massachusetts, Dr. Jett served as both chief executive officer and health commissioner for the Florida Department of Public Health in Seminole County from 2013 to 2016. His tenure was marked by the establishment of an Office of Health Equity and an Office of Community Health and Education, both of which significantly improved community engagement and addressed budgetary challenges. Additionally, he played a crucial role in passing one of the few smoke-free policies that included e-cigarettes, positioning Seminole County as a leader in tobacco control.

Dr. Jett began his career with his impactful work with Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness from 1998 to 2009. As a manager, he was instrumental in reducing infant mortality rates and founded the Office of Men’s Health at the Shawnee neighborhood site, a pioneering initiative for Kentucky. His efforts laid the groundwork for future public health advancements in the region.

In academia, Dr. Jett was active as an adjunct assistant professor at Tufts University’s School of Medicine from 2017 to 2021, where he shared his wealth of expertise with future healthcare leaders. His professional affiliations include his appointment as board chairman for both the Center for Multicultural Wellness and Prevention and the Kentucky Health Center Network, as well as the past president of the National Association of County and City Health Officers.

Dr. Jett’s educational background is extensive and diverse, providing a solid foundation for his career achievements. He initially pursued an education at Tennessee State University, from which he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural statistics in 1991. He subsequently continued his studies with a master’s degree in biosystems engineering from The University of Tennessee in 1995 and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Suffolk University in 2021. He concluded his academic efforts with a doctorate in preventive medicine from the University of Kentucky in 2011. These impressive academic accomplishments have equipped Dr. Jett with a comprehensive understanding of public health systems and strategies.

Recognized as a top leader in philanthropy, Dr. Jett attributes his success to his unwavering work ethic and faith. Looking toward the future, he envisions creating an indoor food center that will supply fresh produce to local farmers, food pantries, and training kitchens. With $4.8 million in funding from MacKenzie Scott, Dr. Jett aims to establish this center as a model for similar initiatives nationwide, ensuring sustainable impacts on community health and wellness.
