Mr. Smith’s illustrious career spans over five decades, culminating in his role as the founder and chief executive officer of HITvision in the Greater Philadelphia area since 2014. In his role, he continues to drive innovation in health care information technology by supporting integrated enterprise private business product portfolios and external health care partnerships. Mr. Smith’s leadership has also been instrumental in delivering health information to professionals at the point of care.
Besides his work at HITvision, Mr. Smith founded Shared Health Plan Systems LLC, focusing on America’s first vendor-supplied multi-tenant health plan operations platform capability. His LLC will allow multiple health plans to administer all its respective health products on a single shared operations platform, delivering millions of dollars of administrative expense savings to each LLC owner.
Before pivoting into entrepreneurship over a decade ago, Mr. Smith enjoyed a tenured career at Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield from 1993 to 2014. For more than 20 years, he excelled with the insurance company. Initially hired as the chief information officer, he became a senior vice president. While at Blue Cross, Mr. Smith introduced Arkansas’s first integrated health information exchange system. This innovation facilitated seamless electronic communication between doctors and hospitals across the state. Mr. Smith’s contributions were recognized at the national level when President George W. Bush invited him to assist in developing a national health information (IT) technology strategy.
Earlier, Mr. Smith was employed by Independence Blue Cross as the vice president of claims, beginning in 1977. Over the next 15 years, he was instrumental in several significant claims processing and management advancements. Among other roles, Mr. Smith served as the vice chair of the board of directors for Intelimedix.
Mr. Smith’s education laid the foundation for his entry into the banking sector, where he first encountered professionals from Blue Cross Blue Shield. This interaction piqued his interest in the health care industry, leading him to join Blue Cross Blue Shield in Illinois, the second-largest technology consumer in any company organization in America. Mr. Smith was pivotal in developing the Inter-Plan system, revolutionizing health care claims communication and verification.
In preparation for his future, Mr. Smith’s academic pursuits included earning a Bachelor of Science in industrial management from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Wheaton in 1971 and a Master of Business Administration in finance and financial management services from Loyola University Chicago in 1973. Besides his formal education, he obtained credentials as a certified health care and IT arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association. Mr. Smith also served his country in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Smith actively participates in industry standard-setting committees as a member of the American Arbitration Association. His commitment to excellence extends beyond his professional achievements, driven by a desire to help others and share his wealth of knowledge with future generations.
