Mr. Lathem’s tenure at Clarion Partners was marked by significant achievements in forming Clarion Partners’ hotel investment platform, where he successfully invested approximately $4 billion.
Before joining Clarion Partners, Mr. Lathem excelled as senior vice president at Sarofim Realty Advisors Co. from 1996 to 2006. In this capacity, he honed his skills in acquisitions, portfolio management, asset management and client relations, further solidifying his reputation as a trusted advisor in the industry. Mr. Lathem began his storied career at Arthur Andersen & Co. from 1981 to 1987 and later with Marriott Corporation from 1987 to 1992, during that company’s rapid growth. He was chief asset manager at the Teacher Retirement System of Texas from 1992 to 1994 with responsibility for a team managing $3.5 billion of real estate equity and debt investments. As the director of portfolio management at Trammell Crow Realty Advisors from 1994 to 1996, he gained invaluable experience in overseeing the turnaround of several troubled real estate investment portfolios.
To support his professional ambitions, Mr. Lathem pursued a formal education at Millsaps College, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in business in 1981. This notable educational background laid the groundwork for his successful career by equipping him with essential business acumen and expanding upon his analytically-driven skill set. Mr. Lathem further attributes his success to a strong motivation driven by his passion for the business and a genuine enjoyment of interacting with people.
In addition to his primary responsibilities, Mr. Lathem is actively involved in several industry-related organizations, including the Urban Land Institute and membership in ULI’s Hotel Development Council, the Hospitality Asset Managers Association and the American Hotel & Lodging Association. He is additionally affiliated with the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries and the Pension Real Estate Association. Mr. Lathem’s engagement with the aforementioned associations reflect his commitment to remaining current with the latest developing industry trends and contributing to the advancement of effective real estate investment practices.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. Lathem is a dedicated supporter of Children’s Medical Center, demonstrating his commitment to civic engagement and philanthropy. He also serves as the vice chair of the Board of Trustees at Millsaps College and recently chaired that institution’s search for a new president. He also enjoys traveling and engaging in philanthropic work, which aligns with his personal values and desire to make a positive impact on society.
