Alan F. Karr, Principal at JA Analytics & Insights LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements and leadership in Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Research and Higher Education.
Mr. Karr has established a distinguished career in the fields of statistics and artificial intelligence, marked by his current role as principal at JA Analytics & Insights LLC since 2024. In this capacity, he leads several research projects at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, primarily for industrial clients, while also managing departmental administration.
In addition to his role as principal of JA Analytics & Insights LLC, Mr. Karr’s position as principal at AFK Analytics, which he has held since 2019, further underscores his commitment to advancing data science. Since 2020, he has also been instrumental as a senior data scientist at Fraunhofer USA Center Mid-Atlantic, where he continues to contribute to innovative data solutions. Furthermore, since 2022, Mr. Karr has served as a faculty member in the department of statistics, operations and data science at the Fox School of Business at Temple University as a professor of research and as a managing director at the Data Science Institute on campus.
Leveraging over 50 years of expertise, Mr. Karr held the title of director of the Center of Excellence for Complex Data Analysis at RTI International, an independent scientific research institute dedicated to improving the human condition headquartered in North Carolina, from 2014 to 2019. He is also recognized as director emeritus at the National Institute of Statistical Sciences, where he was instrumental between 2000 and 2014. Mr. Karr’s academic journey began with professorships at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1993 to 2014 and Johns Hopkins University between 1973 and 1993.
In addition to his primary roles, Mr. Karr has held numerous adjunct and visiting positions that have enriched his professional experience. He was an adjunct professor of biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2015 to 2020 and a visiting senior research professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Living Analytics Research Center between 2015 and 2019.
Mr. Karr’s academic foundation began with a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in 1969 from Northwestern University, followed by a Master of Science in industrial engineering in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in applied mathematics in 1973. Besides his formal education, he has stayed informed of industry trends through professional organizations. Mr. Karr is recognized as an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and a member of the American Association for Public Opinion Research and the International Statistical Institute. He is also a member of Johns Hopkins University’s Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Karr is actively involved in civic organizations, serving as the founder of the Society for Privacy and Confidentiality Research since 2024. He also supports the English National Opera, Opera Philadelphia, and the Academy of Vocal Arts.
A prolific author, Mr. Karr has made significant contributions to statistical literature with works, such as “Point Processes and their Statistical Inference,” 2nd Edition, in 1991, and “Probability” in 1993. He has also disseminated his research findings in various refereed papers.
Mr. Karr’s contributions have been recognized with awards, including the President’s Award from RTI International, in both 2016 and 2017. His ability to collaborate with scientists across disciplines has been instrumental in his success, enabling him to communicate effectively with individuals facing unique data challenges. Looking ahead, Mr. Karr aims to foster a culture that values the role of data in scientific research and policy-making, while enhancing the university’s impact in public life.
