Gerald Trentham, MFA, artistic director at Pounds Per Square Inch Performance, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements and leadership in fine arts and dance performance.
With more than 30 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Trentham has carved a distinguished career in the arts, marked by his profound contributions to dance, theater, and voice coaching. As the artistic director of Pounds Per Square Inch Performance since 1995, he has been instrumental in shaping the aforementioned company’s creative vision and direction. His work is deeply rooted in the arts, where he collaborates with visual artists, designs spaces, and creates choreography and performances that blend poetry and dance with a contemporary approach. Mr. Trentham’s unique perspective on choreography, influenced by his reading disability, allows him to create layered works that challenge traditional narratives.
In addition to his role at Pounds Per Square Inch Performance, Mr. Trentham has excelled as a director at tfoundation since 2012. His expertise in fine arts and dance performance is further demonstrated through his long-standing position as a faculty member at Canada’s National Voice Intensive, now known as the Moving Voice Institute, since 1996. In this role, he imparts his knowledge of voice and speech to aspiring performers, drawing from his own graduate studies in these fields. Mr. Trentham is additionally active as a theater lecturer at Buffalo State University.
Mr. Trentham began his career with a global tour as a dancer, during which time he gained international acclaim for his performances. This experience not only solidified his reputation but also inspired him to explore other artistic avenues. Over the years, he has produced nearly 50 artworks, including notable pieces such as “The Cathedral” and “The Valley of Shadows.” His dedication to the arts is reflected in his membership with industry-related organizations like the Association of Theatre Educators, the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists, and the Artists’ Health Centre.
To support his professional ambitions, Mr. Trentham pursued an education at the University of Alberta, from which he earned a Bachelor of Arts in recreation administration, with honors. He subsequently concluded his studies at York University, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in theatre performance with a focus on voice and speech teaching in 1998. Despite facing challenges due to dyslexia, These academic achievements have been pivotal in his success as an educator and artist.
Mr. Trentham attributes much of his success to his tenacity, as he refuses to give up in the face of adversity and rejection. He is also grateful for the support of his family and mentors who have inspired him throughout his career. His ability to see potential in every challenge has allowed him to thrive in various roles within the arts community. He continues to mentor emerging artists through initiatives like the New Fulcrum Artists group, fostering collaboration among solo artists.
In his personal life, Mr. Trentham enjoys gardening and athletics alongside his spouse Jeffrey Livingston. Looking ahead, he aims to step down from his role as artistic director while leaving behind a legacy for future generations of artists. He is currently developing projects that promote collaboration among solo artists on shared platforms and is deeply engaged in work with Diane Roberts on legacy voice and ancestry exploration.
