John M. Leonard, first vice president and regional manager at Marcus & Millichap, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in real estate.
Celebrating a professional history that has stretched out for over 30 years, Mr. Leonard has positioned himself as a leader in the worlds of real estate and property negotiation. He initially joined Marcus & Millichap in 1995 as first vice president of investments, holding that position for nearly 20 years. In 2013, Mr. Leonard struck out on his own, utilizing his experience to open his own firm, JML Investments and Brokerage. Concurrently with operating his business, he contributed as a regional managing partner for Franklin Street Real Estate Services and as an executive vice president at A10 Capital.
After further solidifying his credentials, Mr. Leonard returned to Marcus & Millichap in 2019, stepping into the role of first vice president and regional manager. Focused on business in the Atlanta and Southeast United States markets, he oversees recruitment, hiring, training, retention, deployment and strategic direction for the organization. Mr. Leonard also helps acquire property listings and engages in contract negotiations. He works directly with virtually every sales agent employed by the organization in the area.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Mr. Leonard set himself up for success with a strong education, beginning with a Bachelor of Arts in math and English from Fairfield University in 1984. Two years later, he obtained a second Bachelor of Arts in English from The State University of New York at Potsdam. Subsequently, Mr. Leonard earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 1999. He later completed a mini-Master of Business Administration in accounting and finance at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business. He is also certified as a commercial investment member through The CCIM Institute.
Mr. Leonard has been a member of several important organizations relevant to his field. He has been associated with the International Council of Shopping Centers, the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, and the National Association of Realtors. Mr. Leonard has maintained membership in the Mortgage Brokers Association since 2016.
Noted for his achievements in the field, Mr. Leonard has received a number of accolades. He was named Marcus & Millichap’s Regional Manager of the Year in 2008. Mr. Leonard was also inducted into the Upstate New York Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. He credits his success to the support and guidance provided by his mentors throughout his career. In order to honor that legacy, Mr. Leonard has prioritized being a mentor himself. He considers witnessing the growth of employees and independent contractors under his watch to be the greatest highlight of his professional life.
Additionally known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Mr. Leonard dedicates time and resources to causes in his community. An outspoken supporter of military veterans, he advocates for the USO and the Wounded Warrior Project. Mr. Leonard has volunteered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, fighting against hunger in his area. As a loving pet owner, he has also been affiliated with Pet Partners, an organization that trains therapy animals.
Beyond his primary vocation, Mr. Leonard is also a devoted husband and father to one daughter. Outside of work, he enjoys golfing, boating and spending time with his dog. In looking to the future, Mr. Leonard aims to continue his current trajectory at Marcus & Millichap, including training, supporting and mentoring new brokers. His motto moving forward is “Just keep doing it.”
