Andrea Hurt, MSJ

Title: Assistant Vice President of Governance and Assurance
Company:
Wintrust Life Finance
Location:
Newark, New Jersey, United States

Andrea Hurt, MSJ, assistant vice president of governance and assurance at Wintrust Life Finance, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in finance and legal services.

Despite devoting 15 years to the field of finance, Ms. Hurt has never considered herself a “numbers person.” Having had a math tutor since second grade, she never would have expected to end up pursuing a master’s degree and a professional life related to mathematics. Encouraged by her high school tutor (who is now her accountant), Ms. Hurt has excelled in roles that blend finance and the law. She has demonstrated admirable persistence even when faced with subjects that she wasn’t initially passionate about engaging with.

Ms. Hurt’s professional journey began in 2010 when she was recruited by Atrium to be a senior office administrator and project manager. After more than five years with the company, she was promoted to project manager and contract and open invoice expediter. The latter position was a first test of Ms. Hurt’s ability to utilize her math skills, as she had to analyze invoices of up to $900,000, totaling up to $11 million biweekly. She also showcased her skill at navigating the complexities of compliance and regulations while at Atrium.

In 2019, Ms. Hurt left Atrium and joined Jackson Hewitt Inc. in franchise administration and compliance. She helped establish internal controls for the company and promoted a diligent risk management culture. Since 2022, Ms. Hurt has served as assistant vice president of governance and assurance at Wintrust Life Finance, bringing that same expertise to bear for one of the largest life insurance companies in the United States. She collaborates with teams across the company to ensure compliance while monitoring performance and key risk indicators. Ms. Hurt has seen multiple notable career milestones during her time at Wintrust, including contributing to the organization’s growth and its transition to new systems. She has also led her own team in expanding from six employees to 12.

Ms. Hurt’s performance in the field was born of her academic foundation. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history from Hampton University. Subsequently, Ms. Hurt earned a Master of Science in jurisprudence and financial compliance from Seton Hall Law School. Dedicated to lifelong learning, she has further bolstered her skills through professional training. Ms. Hurt is licensed as a paralegal through Duke University and as a notary public through the state of New Jersey. She is also certified in corporate governance through Wharton Executive Education.

A volunteer within her local community, Ms. Hurt has devoted her time and resources to causes she believes in. She is a strong supporter of Harmony Dance Center, a community dance studio that specializes in strong education in the technical aspects of dance. In partnership with that institution and in memory of a close friend who passed away unexpectedly, Ms. Hurt created the Melissa Martinez Scholarship. This fund gives money to each graduating student at Harmony Dance Center.

Outside of her career, Ms. Hurt finds balance through practicing yoga. Ambitious in her ongoing endeavors, she intends to spend more time in the near future mentoring younger people in the industry. Alongside that, Ms. Hurt aims to become a chief compliance officer, a goal that she views herself as in the learning stage of achieving. She looks forward to continued advancement and personal growth as she pursues this objective.
