Joseph Houston Adams, AIA, architect and designer at Adams Architects, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in architecture.

Practicing as an architect since the 1970s, Mr. Adams has operated his own firm alongside his wife since 1995. As an architect and designer at Adams Architects, Inc., he specializes in creating designs for both residential and commercial buildings in the Houston area. Mr. Adams has positioned himself as a leader in sustainable architecture, prioritizing eco-friendly and energy-efficient design. He regularly implements green technology, such as solar heating and cooling. Additionally, Mr. Adams has assisted with the renovation and conservation of historic buildings. He operates in multiple cities in the Houston region of Texas, such as Cypress, Galveston, Montgomery and Tomball.

Mr. Adams’ performance in the field was born of his academic journey. He obtained a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College in 1970. Subsequently, Mr. Adams earned a Master in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. He has been further credentialed through the American Institute of Architects.

Having worked on a wide range of noteworthy projects, Mr. Adams has been the subject of numerous accolades. He was presented the Houston PaperCity Design Award for Residential Architecture Design in 2024 and is a previous recipient of the American Institute of Architects Award. The former prize was given in recognition of Mr. Adams’ work on a challenging home design that seamlessly integrated dense natural surroundings with a stylish house. A second home designed by Adams Architects Inc. was given an Honorable Mention the same year.

Other major projects from Mr. Adams include: The Light House, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum-certified house in Houston that utilizes geothermal heating and cooling and is entirely solar-powered; the Energy House, a solar-powered residence on 60 acres of land outside of Houston with a unique metal exterior; the Solarium, a small addition to a house in Houston featuring windows across all walls and the ceiling; the De Neve Plaza, a quadrangle in the University of California, Los Angeles containing 2,000 beds of student housing and created to help build a greater sense of community on the campus; the Ronald McDonald House in Galveston, Texas, located in the city’s historical homes district and mixing Victorian-style architecture with a playfulness to encourage a positive, healing atmosphere; and the Ranch Museum, a project that brought together a ranch house with the owners’ private museum, creating a structure heated and cooled by a spring-fed lake that fits in perfectly with the natural beauty of rural Texas.

A volunteer within his local community, Mr. Adams finds various ways to give back to those in need. He is an active member of the Episcopal Church and has been associated with the Jerusalem Peacebuilders.

Outside of his esteemed career as an architect, Mr. Adams is also a loving husband, father to three daughters and grandfather to three granddaughters. He attributes his success to the strong business partnership he has fostered with his wife, who helps him find a solution no matter what difficulties they encounter. When considering his future, Mr. Adams remains focused on creating and advancing the cause of environmentally conscious architecture. He emphasizes the importance of doing so in Houston, which is often called the oil and gas capital of the world.
