Julie Anna Hurst, MBA, assistant vice president and controller at California Coast Credit Union, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in accounting and banking.
Establishing her reputation in accounting across the last 20 years, Ms. Hurst has specialized in the intersection of accounting and banks. This journey started in 2005 when she joined California Bank & Trust as an accounting supervisor. Ms. Hurst recalls beginning in a customer-facing role and getting to understand the business well from that perspective. However, as soon as she was given an opportunity to transition into the back office, she quickly recognized that she wanted to fully immerse herself in a more behind-the-scenes operational position.
Continuing in that direction, Ms. Hurst became a senior accountant at San Diego County Credit Union in 2014. During a seven-year tenure with North Island Credit Union, she took on greater responsibility as an accounting manager and assistant vice president and was later promoted to assistant controller and assistant vice president. While associated with North Island Credit Union, Ms. Hurst helped guide the organization through a major merger, which she notes as one of the largest projects she’s ever managed and a defining moment in her career. In 2021, she took a brief break from working in banks as an accounting manager for the San Diego Convention Center Corporation, followed by contributing as an accounting manager at Mulligan Funding.
Culminating her career so far, Ms. Hurst was hired as assistant vice president and controller at California Coast Credit Union. Her responsibilities include overseeing all financial reporting and maintaining regulatory compliance. Ms. Hurst also prioritizes mentorship and works hard to help the staff she manages progress professionally. She is proud that several former employees have moved on to become controllers and chief financial officers.
Prior to embarking upon her professional path, Ms. Hurst gained the foundational knowledge she would rely on through school. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Colorado State University in 2001. Returning to the world of academia more recently, Ms. Hurst earned a Master of Business Administration in accounting and finance from San Diego State University in 2023. She has been a member of the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance since 2024.
Though her work has required working up to 12-hour days, Ms. Hurst has eagerly invested that time and effort. She feels a sense of accomplishment at having achieved many of the goals she set out for herself years ago and at being recognized by leadership in the companies she has worked for. Mr. Hurst attributes her success to her drive and her attention to detail. She also recognizes the importance of her passion for advocating for professional women and demonstrating that women are just as capable as men.
Outside of her career, Ms. Hurst is a loving mother to 13-year-old twins, Jaxon and Madisyn. She spends most of her time outside of work with them. Looking ahead, Ms. Hurst plans to keep advancing in her career as a controller and assistant vice president at California Coast Credit Union while also prioritizing a healthier work-life balance than she has had at earlier times. She has considered shifting into consulting one day but has no plans to do so in the immediate future.
