For 50 years, Mr. Fortson has worked hard to establish his esteemed reputation in the fields of tax services and accounting. He was drawn to this professional path due to his skill in mathematics and his lifelong desire to help others. Mr. Fortson’s career started with two years of association with H&R Block. During this time, he picked up essential knowledge that he still employs to this day.
Mr. Fortson followed up his early experience with involvement in local government. He contributed as a finance director and country clerk for the Board of Commissioners for the Governing Authority. In 1981, Mr. Fortson became a tax appraiser for his local county government. Specifically, he appraised real estate to help determine accurate property taxes for the region.
After more than 10 years working as a tax appraiser, Mr. Fortson experienced a conflict with the then-chairman of the board of commissioners, an elected official who wanted Mr. Fortson to change his assessments to make some citizens happy. He refused and was consequently fired from his tax appraiser role in 1992. At this point, Mr. Fortson focused on helping a small number of individual clients with tax returns, while he and his wife prayed for a change of leadership. A new chairman was elected and Mr. Fortson returned to the position of tax appraiser in 1997, remaining in that line of work for just over another 10 years.
Concurrently with his second tenure as a tax appraiser, Mr. Fortson founded his own company, Fortson Business Services, in 1996. Since then, he has served as that organization’s chief financial officer and as an accountant. Among other responsibilities, Mr. Fortson handles accounting write-ups, annual tax returns, biweekly or monthly payroll, and quarterly payroll reports for 25 clients. He also prepares tax returns for other businesses and individual customers, while his wife assists with accounting tasks.
Though he handles individual tax returns as well, Mr. Fortson particularly enjoys working with local businesses and farms. He has built a reputation for caring deeply for his clients and showcasing genuine interest in their lives and needs. Mr. Fortson recalls one especially strong memory of a longtime client who was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2024 and left Mr. Fortson and his family a personal message before he passed away. After that client’s death, Mr. Fortson continued assisting the widow with tax filings and helped her navigate legal battles over control of the estate. This experience also led him to pursue counseling classes in order to better support clients going through moments of crisis.
To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Mr. Fortson has maintained his professional affiliation with a number of pertinent organizations. He is an active member of the National Association of Tax Preparers and the Madison County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Fortson has previously been affiliated with the Rotary Club. He is a past winner of the Rotarian of the Month honor.
In addition to his professional life, Mr. Fortson has been happily married to his wife, Patricia, since 1979, and is a loving father to two and grandfather to two. He finds joy outside of work in spending time with his pet dog, Pete, an eight-month-old boxer, and in caring for his 20 acres of land. Mr. Fortson also emphasizes the importance of religion in his personal and career success, having dedicated his life to his strong faith since age 34. He volunteers regularly with the Mount Pleasant Community Church.
