Before his current role, Mr. Hugh was a police officer with the New York City Police Department from 1997 to 2003. During this period, he developed foundational skills in law enforcement and community relations that would inform his later leadership positions. Mr. Hugh’s career began in 1997 as a corrections officer with the New York City Department of Corrections, where he gained early experience in public safety and criminal justice operations.
Mr. Hugh’s academic background includes earning a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1993. This educational foundation provided him with critical insights into social dynamics and community engagement, skills that have been integral to his success in law enforcement and organizational leadership.
Mr. Hugh’s leadership extends beyond his primary roles and is reflected in his involvement with civic-minded organizations. He currently serves as the president of the Suffolk County Police Asian Jade Society, an organization he co-founded in 2014. In this capacity, Mr. Hugh is responsible for leading initiatives that foster community engagement and support among Asian American law enforcement professionals. Among other involvements, his service has included membership on the board of directors of the National Asian Peace Officers Association since 2023. Additionally, Mr. Hugh serves as the president of the Police Association of Suffolk County Inc., where he notably became the first Asian-American to hold the position, marking a historic achievement within the organization, and is active on the board of directors for both the National Asian Peace Officers’ Association and the Police Association of Suffolk County Inc.
Throughout his professional journey, Mr. Hugh has achieved several significant milestones. His exemplary service was recognized in 2018 with the SCPD Exceptional Police Service Award. In 2023, the Town of Brookhaven designated July 18th as Edwin Hugh Day, recognizing his contributions to the community. He was also named a Dan’s Paper Power List East End Honoree and a Schnepf’s Media Leaders of Labor Honoree in 2024. Among other honors, Mr. Hugh’s dedication was recognized nationally when he received the U.S. Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in Community Policing from U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in Washington, D.C. This accolade is among his most notable achievements and underscores his impact on community policing efforts.
