Mr. Coers has established a distinguished career in architecture and civil engineering, marked by a steady progression from entry-level roles to forming his own firm. As the founder and principal architect of AC Architecture, PLLC, in Mason City, Illinois, since 2024, he manages client relationships, coordinates with contractors, oversees communications and handles financial operations. Under Mr. Coers’s leadership, the company is on track to achieve significant revenue milestones and has secured major clients. He is especially proud of transforming his office building, originally constructed in the late 1860s or early 1870s and once slated for demolition, into one of the most notable structures in town. This adaptive reuse project stands as a testament to his commitment to community revitalization and sustainable design.
Before establishing his own practice, Mr. Coers served as a design manager at Rivian in Normal, Illinois, from 2023 to 2024. In this capacity, he contributed to the design and planning of advanced-technology manufacturing facilities, further developing his expertise in electric-vehicle and automated manufacturing environments. Mr. Coers also held dual roles as a project architect and design manager at P.J. Hoerr Inc., a respected general contractor, construction manager and design-builder in Illinois, from 2022 to 2023, overseeing architectural projects from conception through completion. His responsibilities included managing multidisciplinary teams and ensuring that projects met both client expectations and regulatory standards.
Between 2020 and 2023, Mr. Coers worked as an architect education specialist with Black Spectacles, where he played a key role in developing educational resources for aspiring architects. Part of his responsibilities included creating content for those working toward licensure and fulfilling ARE examination requirements.
Among other notable roles, Mr. Coers was an architect at Graham & Hyde Architects in Springfield, Illinois, from 2021 to 2022, where he contributed to a variety of commercial and institutional projects. His tenure at Farnsworth Group, Inc., spanned several positions, beginning as a senior Revit technician in 2018 and culminating as an architect between 2020 and 2021, during which he gained comprehensive experience in architectural design, technical documentation and project coordination.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Coers gained valuable experience as a construction estimator at Morton Buildings, Inc., in Morton, Illinois, and as a detailer II and inside sales coordinator at American Buildings Company in El Paso, Texas, dating back to 2012.
Mr. Coers is highly educated, having earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2012, and both a master’s degree in architecture and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2019 and 2002, respectively. In addition to his degrees, he holds multiple professional credentials that underscore his commitment to excellence and industry standards. Among them, Mr. Coers received Occupational Safety and Health Administration 10-hour certification through CareerSafe and a LEED AP Building Design + Construction certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. He also received licensed architect credentials in Missouri, Connecticut, New Jersey, Illinois, Utah and Texas. Among other designations, Mr. Coers maintains National Council of Architectural Registration Boards certification.
Active in his professional community, Mr. Coers is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Montadale Sheep Breeders Association, reflecting both his professional standing and personal interests. Notably, Mr. Coers raises sheep during his downtime. Additionally, he is civically engaged as a volunteer mentor for sophomore high school students and an active supporter of Reimagine Mason City, demonstrating his dedication to community development.
Throughout his career, Mr. Coers has attributed his success to perseverance, creative problem-solving and a willingness to embrace challenging projects. Looking ahead, he aims to expand AC Architecture, PLLC, by building a team of resilient professionals who can effectively navigate industry challenges. Mr. Coers is presently exploring opportunities for overseas projects and for work in states where he does not currently hold licensure, seeking broader exposure for himself and his firm.
