Jason William Berry, MPA, Deputy Fire Chief at Cannon Fire & Emergency Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements and leadership in Fire and Emergency Services.
Mr. Berry has established a long and successful career in fire and emergency services, demonstrating expertise in planning, administration and the execution of complex fire and emergency operations. As the deputy fire chief at Cannon Fire & Emergency Services, Cannon Air Force Base, U.S. Air Force, in Clovis, New Mexico, since 2025, he has managed operations through an assistant fire chief. He is also responsible for running the department, conducting strategic planning and community risk assessments, and establishing standards to address evolving challenges such as COVID-19. Additionally, Mr. Berry oversees training and fire prevention, conducts code enforcement and safety inspections, forecasts budgets and secures funding for daily operational needs.
From 2024 to 2025, Mr. Berry served as an installation fire chief at Cannon Fire & Emergency Services, where he led the department’s overall mission and ensured operational readiness. Among his other roles during his tenure, he excelled as the fire chief, overseeing all firefighting operations and administrative processes. Mr. Berry’s career at Cannon Fire & Emergency Services began in 2018 as an acting fire chief.
From 2016 to 2018, Mr. Berry worked for the Fort Wainwright Fire Department in Fairbanks, Alaska, as an assistant fire chief of Prevention. This role followed a brief tenure as the deputy chief of operations at Edwards Fire Emergency Services at Edwards Air Force Base in California between 2015 and 2016.
Mr. Berry’s earlier commitments included more than five years with the U.S. military. From 2013 to 2014 and again from 2014 to 2015, he was appointed as the superintendent of fire emergency services and emergency management for the U.S. Air Force, overseeing large-scale emergency response efforts. He also held the roles of battalion and station chief of operations, assistant fire chief of operations, assistant fire chief of training, and deputy fire chief with the U.S. Air Force Protection between 2009 and 2013, during which he developed training curricula for personnel, oversaw policies and procedures, and managed operations.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Berry’s international experience included serving as a senior fire emergency services adviser and mentor in Afghanistan RC-South from 2010 to 2011 with the U.S. Air Force. Among his previous positions, he excelled as an instructor and instructor supervisor and as a driver and operator within the field. Mr. Berry’s career began in 1997 as a firefighter with the U.S. Air Force Fire Protection in New Mexico for two years.
Mr. Berry completed foundational training at the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, in 1997. He then received an Associate of Applied Science as an instructor of military technology from the Community College of the Air Force in Montgomery in 2006, followed by a bachelor’s degree in fire service management from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2009. Years later, Mr. Berry returned to college, earning a Master of Public Administration from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 2017. He also completed the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy under the U.S. Fire Administration in 2023, a milestone he considers the pinnacle event of his career due to its rigorous leadership curriculum and national recognition among senior fire officers.
In addition to his formal education, Mr. Berry’s many professional credentials include master instructor by Air Education and Training Command, professional manager certification by Community College of the Air Force, emergency medical responder and fire inspector III certification by International Fire Service Accreditation Congress, and designation as a chief fire officer by the Center for Public Safety Excellence. These designations are a testament to his continued desire for growth and his passion for continued education.
Active in his professional community, Mr. Berry is affiliated with the Alaska Fire Chiefs Association, the Fire Department Safety Officers Association and F.O.O.L.S. International. Among other endeavors, he has been a peer reviewer for the Center for Public Safety Excellence Commission on Professional Credentialing since 2018. Beyond his professional commitments, Mr. Berry is deeply involved in civic activities, including serving as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and volunteering with local charities, such as Lighthouse Missions in Clovis.
Throughout his career, Mr. Berry has been recognized for his commitment to excellence in customer service during critical incidents, often reminding young firefighters that their opportunities arise during others’ most challenging moments. He takes pride in actions that have made a meaningful impact on lives, including successfully fighting significant fires that resulted in major saves and performing life-saving CPR.
Mr. Berry’s exemplary service has been recognized with numerous awards over the past two decades, beginning with instructor accolades at the Louis F. Garland Department of Defense Fire Academy at Goodfellow Air Force Base in 2005. More recently, he was honored with a Garrison Civilian Supervisor of the First Quarter in 2018, an Achievement Medal for Civilian Service in 2018, an Air Force Special Operations Command in 2020, and a Category III Civilian of the Year for the 27th Special Operations Wing of the U.S. Air Force in 2024. Mr. Berry also received multiple Commendation Medals and Achievement Medals, a National Defense Service Star and an Afghanistan NATO Medal.
Attributing his success to hard work, determination, personal responsibility and a positive mindset, Mr. Berry has continually focused on excellence even in adversity. Looking ahead, he plans to pursue further advancement within his field while considering additional education. Among other goals, Mr. Berry and his wife aspire to relocate to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he hopes to secure a position at Kirtland Air Force Base and start their own business as the owners of a small recreational vehicle park complemented by a bed-and-breakfast and wedding venue. These goals demonstrate both his lifelong dedication to learning and his entrepreneurial spirit.
