Stuart B. Mitchell, Founder and President at BioDesign Research and Development, Founder and President and Chief Executive Officer at Biomimetic Electrospinning Technologies, and Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer at Novuson, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Health Care Technology.

Dr. Mitchell’s distinguished career spans nearly five decades, marked by innovation, leadership and a commitment to advancing biomedical engineering. Since 2005, he has led BioDesign Research and Development as the founder and president, focusing on innovative solutions in biomedical engineering and research commercialization. Headquartered in Lake Forest Park, Washington, the company provides biomechanics consulting, biomedical device design and development, biomedical instrumentation design and development, systems analysis and tissue engineering consulting.

In addition to his work at BioDesign Research and Development, Dr. Mitchell has been the founder, president and chief executive officer of Biomimetic Electrospinning Technologies, also based in Lake Forest Park, since 2011. Through this venture, he has contributed to the field by producing biomimetic scaffolds for tissue engineering, developing new techniques for fabricating three-dimensional scaffolds, and engaging in electrospinning consulting to support tissue engineering applications.

More recently, Dr. Mitchell became the founder, president, chief executive officer and chief scientific officer of Novuson Surgical Inc. Since 2014, he has led the development of a groundbreaking surgical energy device that employs high-intensity ultrasound. This technology is designed to allow surgeons to simultaneously cut and cauterize tissue, reducing bleeding and procedural time while minimizing hazards such as excessive tissue damage and surgical smoke. Under Dr. Mitchell’s direction, Novuson Surgical Inc. secured several U.S. patents and developed five prototypes with support from National Institutes of Health grants. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, he remains dedicated to bringing this transformative product to market.

Before his entrepreneurial endeavors, Dr. Mitchell built a robust academic research portfolio at the University of Washington. From 2006 to 2015, he was a senior research engineer and scientist, during which he studied instrumentation and tissue response, work that directly informed his later innovations at Novuson Surgical Inc. Dr. Mitchell also served as a research engineer and scientist between 2005 and 2006 and as a research associate in 2005.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Mitchell was appointed a senior fellow at his university in 2004. He also excelled as an information technology consultant and partner at Biomimetic Electrospinning Technologies from 2003 to 2013, where he provided technical guidance during the company’s formative years.

Dr. Mitchell’s academic foundation began with an Associate of Applied Science in engineering from Shoreline Community College in Shoreline in 1992. He continued at the University of Washington in Seattle, earning a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1996, a Master of Science in bioengineering and biomedical engineering in 1998, and culminating with a Doctor of Philosophy in bioengineering and biomedical engineering in 2004.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Mitchell remains a member of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society, the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound, the Acoustical Society of America, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Beyond his professional roles, he has demonstrated civic engagement through various organizations. Since 2012, Dr. Mitchell has most notably served as a ride leader for Cascade Bicycle Club, promoting community health and wellness through cycling activities.

Dr. Mitchell’s scholarly contributions include co-authoring influential articles in scholarly publications such as the Journal of Endourology and Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology. Throughout his professional journey, he has also been recognized for pioneering achievements in ultrasound technology. Among his most notable accomplishments was demonstrating that stem cells can be effectively manipulated using ultrasound, a breakthrough that opened new avenues for regenerative medicine. Dr. Mitchell also established that mechanical architectures can influence stem cell behavior, further expanding the potential for therapeutic interventions.

Crediting his success to collaborative relationships with talented colleagues, Dr. Mitchell also acknowledges the encouragement and support provided by his wife, a retired veterinarian, throughout his educational pursuits. Notably, he and his wife co-founded an around-the-clock veterinary specialty clinic that they operated together for a decade before launching Novuson Surgical Inc., reflecting their shared entrepreneurial spirit.

Looking ahead, Dr. Mitchell envisions Novuson Surgical Inc.’s technology becoming a global standard that transforms surgical practice by enhancing safety and efficacy for patients and surgeons worldwide. While planning eventual retirement from day-to-day leadership responsibilities, he remains committed to advancing technological innovation within biomedical engineering. Dr. Mitchell’s legacy is defined by scientific ingenuity, dedication to mentorship and collaboration, and an unwavering pursuit of solutions that improve patient care worldwide.
