Mr. Blum has established a distinguished career in real estate brokerage, land planning, strategic planning, economic development and public policy formulation. As a real estate broker and partner at NAI STX since 2018, he has played a pivotal role in finding and closing commercial real estate deals, collaborating with colleagues to originate opportunities and specializing in commercial land, office, industrial and open land transactions. Mr. Blum’s responsibilities include working directly with property owners to source listings, secure tenants and buyers, and execute sales and leases. Through his affiliation with NAI Global, Mr. Blum has extended his professional reach beyond McAllen to a worldwide network of offices.

Before the formation of NAI STX, Mr. Blum served as a partner at NAI Rio Grande Valley from 2004 to 2018. During this period, he contributed significantly to the company’s growth and reputation in the region. The firm’s transition to its current identity, NAI STX, marked a new chapter in its evolution while maintaining its long-standing commitment to excellence in commercial real estate.

Mr. Blum previously served as the president and associate at NAI Rioco Realty from 1997 to 2004. This opportunity allowed him to hone his expertise in real estate transactions and client relations at one of the largest commercial and industrial real estate firms in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.

Earlier, Mr. Blum excelled as the founder and president of the Michael J. Blum Company in the Rio Grande Valley from 1988 to 2010, where he provided consulting services that shaped numerous development projects across South Texas. During his tenure, he provided an array of services, including strategic and city planning, as well as real estate and development services for international businesses, industries and governments. Additionally, Mr. Blum’s organization provided data collection, research assistance and expert analysis on various regional, economic and demographic issues.

A transformative period in Mr. Blum’s career began when he became the president of First City Development Services Group in 1989. This opportunity arose after being recognized as Volunteer Industrial Developer of the Year by the Texas Industrial Development Council in 1988, a distinction awarded following nominations from prominent community leaders for his contributions through the McAllen Foreign Trade Zone and the McAllen Economic Development Corporation. The recognition affirmed Mr. Blum’s standing as an economic development professional and led to a pivotal meeting with the chairperson of First City Bank Corp., resulting in Mr. Blum’s appointment as president of the First City Development Services Group. In this capacity, he also served as a consultant to Hunt Oil Company in Dallas, Texas, contributing to the master plan for the 6,000-acre Sharyland Plantation.

From 1979 to 1988, Mr. Blum held dual roles as the director of planning and partner at MBA Architecture Group and Valcon Construction Company. His work during this time encompassed comprehensive planning initiatives that influenced regional growth patterns.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Blum served as an assistant city manager and city planner for the city of McAllen from 1973 to 1979. He was instrumental in shaping municipal policies and guiding urban development during a period of significant change for the city. Before this role, Mr. Blum gained experience as a city planner for the city of Edinburg between 1972 and 1973, following an internship with the Model Cities Agency in Edinburg.

Mr. Blum’s expertise extends beyond private enterprise into public service. He was elected to the board and served as chair of McAllen Public Utility from 1983 to 1999. His military service also played a formative role in his professional journey. After earning his undergraduate degree, Mr. Blum joined the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era, attended Officer Candidate School, and then served as a battalion operations sergeant at Fort Hood for nearly a year. The leadership skills acquired during his two years of service proved invaluable throughout his subsequent career.

A graduate of Texas A&M University, Mr. Blum acquired a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in urban planning. His time at the university was marked by participation in the Corps military program and later shaped by his military service.

Mr. Blum is affiliated with several industry organizations, including the National Association of Realtors and the Greater McAllen Association of Realtors. Meanwhile, his commitment to civic engagement is evident through decades of volunteerism and leadership within community organizations. Most notably, Mr. Blum is a past president of the board of directors of Easter Seals Rio Grande Valley, a past president of Temple Emanuel, and has spent over four decades as a music director and guitarist at a synagogue Sunday school. Among other engagements, he has fundraised for All Faiths United, supporting immigrant families.

Among Mr. Blum’s creative pursuits, he has crafted wood vessels. This artwork has been displayed at the International Museum of Art and Science. Additionally, he has been active in teaching traditional Jewish music to children.

Among Mr. Blum’s most consequential achievements was his central involvement in securing a presidential permit for an international bridge connecting Sharyland Plantation with Mexico between 1992 and 1999. This effort culminated in a personal presentation to President Bill Clinton in January 1998 at the request of then-Representative Ruben Hinojosa. The successful approval of this permit not only reshaped regional logistics but also spurred economic activity well before the bridge opened in 2009. An expansion is scheduled for completion soon.

Mr. Blum’s professional excellence has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Volunteer Industrial Developer of the Year award from the Texas Industrial Development Council in 1988. He was also named Humanitarian of the Year by Easter Seals Rio Grande Valley in 2013 and received a Mayor’s Community Service Award in 2017. More recently, Mr. Blum was recognized as a CoStar Power Broker in 2018, 2021 and 2024.

With the support of his spouse, Patricia, Mr. Blum is dedicated to continuing his real estate work while enjoying retirement with financial independence. Throughout nearly six decades of professional achievement, Mr. Blum has demonstrated unwavering dedication to advancing economic development, fostering community well-being and mentoring future generations through both professional leadership and personal example.
