Susan C. Morisato, President at United Healthcare Medicare & Retirement Insurance Solutions, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in insurance.
With more than 40 years of professional experience, Ms. Morisato has been the president of United Healthcare Medicare & Retirement Insurance Solutions since 2009, having been president of federal programs of United Health Group Alliances from 2007 to 2008. Prior to obtaining these positions, she was the chief operating officer of senior and retiree services at Ovations, Inc., from 2005 to 2007.
From 1979 to 2004, Ms. Morisato held a number of roles with Bankers Life and Casualty Company. She began as an actuarial assistant, becoming an assistant actuary in 1980 and an associate actuary in 1983. In 1985, Ms. Morisato was named a health product actuary, and in 1986, she was named vice president, a title she held until 1995. In 1996, she became senior vice president, and in 2000, she also sat on the board of directors, holding both of these positions until 2004.
Ms. Morisato was inspired to pursue a career in health care due to the challenge it presented and by a fascination she had with the field. In addition, she had a desire to make a difference and help people who were vulnerable. She began her career as a student at the University of Illinois, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1975 and a Master of Science in 1977. Certified by the Society of Actuaries, Ms. Morisato joined Aetna Life & Casualty as an actuarial student following her postgraduate studies until 1979.
A renowned leader in her field, Ms. Morisato is affiliated with numerous organizations in her industry. A fellow of the Society of Actuaries, she has also served the group as a workshop leader, news editor for health section news, and as a conference speaker. A member of the American Academy of Actuaries, she was active with America’s Health Insurance Plans as a member of the long term care task force, also serving as its chair, on the technical advisory committee, legislative policy committee, nominating committee, policy coordinator council, as senior marketing task force chair, Medicare modernizations task force chair, executive committee, board of directors, policy committee, Medicare committee, LTC leadership council, Medigap leadership council and product leadership council. She has also been a speaker at the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance Industry Conference and with America’s Health Insurance Plans Individual Forum.
Ms. Morisato is a member and former conference speaker of the Health Insurance Association of America, a former member of the accelerate benefits/long term care committee of the American Council on Life Insurance, and the former secretary and member of the program committee for the Chicago Actuarial Association. She was active with LIMRA International as a member, vice chair, and chair of the board of directors, chair of the compensation and benefits committee, and as a member of the strategic marketing insurance committee. Ms. Morisato has also been active with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Phi Beta Kappa, Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi.
A respected voice in her community, Ms. Morisato has served as chair of the financial committee and treasurer for the Minnesota Zoo Foundation Board, for which she has also been a trustee. She is a founding member of the University of Illinois Department of Mathematics Advisory Board, and she was on the advisory panel of long term care financing for the Brookings’ Institute.
Attributing her success to her parents, who supported her and gave her the confidence to work in whatever field she chose, Ms. Morisato also credits having mentors along the way, including a supervisor and an executive coach who encouraged her passion for her work. For her contributions to the field, she was given a Founders Award from America’s Health Insurance Plans, and Diversity Journal has named her among their Women Worth Watching. She has also been presented with the 2019 What’s Next Greg O’Neill Vision and Integrity Award at the What’s Next Boomer Business Summit. Looking toward the future, Ms. Morisato hopes to retire and continue working as a volunteer or with nonprofit organizations.
