Edward Surovell, Real Estate Executive at Howard Hanna Property Management, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in real estate brokerage and management.
Following obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in European history from Columbia University in 1962, Mr. Surovell later completed postgraduate coursework at the University of Michigan in 1971. After beginning as a copy editor with Harcourt, Brace & World, Inc., in New York from 1963 to 1965, he excelled as an editor with the Princeton University Press from 1965 to 1967, with Scott, Foresman and Co. in Glenview, Illinois from 1967 to 1968 and with the University of Michigan from 1968 to 1972.
In 1973, Mr. Surovell turned his attention to real estate and excelled as an agent with Fletcher & Klein Inc. from 1973 to 1975 and a sales manager with Charles Reinhart Co. from 1975 to 1982. The following year, he opened Edward Surovell Realtors in Ann Arbor, where he prospered as president until 2012 when the firm merged with the Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, the fourth largest real estate company in the United States at the time. Since then, he has flourished as the firm’s chairman.
Avidly interested in community affairs, Mr. Surovell has served on the board of directors of Kerrytown Concert House, as a trustee of the Library of Michigan Foundation, as president of the Ann Arbor District Library and as a member of Chamber Music America, Michigan Shakespeare Festival, Ann Arbor District Library, Ann Arbor City Planning Commission, Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority, Michigan Board of Professional Community Planners and the Planning Commission of the City of Ann Arbor.
Along with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award, Marquis Who’s Who Top Professional and Marquis Who’s Who Humanitarian Award, Mr. Surovell has captured the Trustee of the Year Award from the Michigan Library Association and was named Realtor of the Year by Ann Arbor Area Board Realtors. In addition, he was awarded the Community Book Award and the Michigan Trustee of the Year by the Michigan Library Association.
Mr. Surovell is especially gratified for his success in real estate, as it permitted him to follow in his father’s footsteps and meet many members of the Ann Arbor community. Now in his eighties, in the coming years he is looking forward to a well-deserved retirement.
