Eugene “Bert” Berkley, Envelope Company Executive at Tension Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the paper goods and packaging industry.
Tension Corporation is a leading manufacturer of custom envelope solutions based in Kansas City, Missouri. The company has diversified by supplying equipment and consumables to e-commerce companies and by installing mail order pharmacies. As chair of the board, Mr. Berkley demonstrates an expertise in the paper goods and packaging industry derived from his 68 years of experience. During his career, he served as the company’s chief executive officer, chairman, and president from 1962 until 1988, and as chairman from 1988 to the present. Additionally, he impacts his field through his work as immediate past chair of the Global Envelope Alliance, having served as chair for six years.
To prepare for his career, Mr. Berkley earned a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University in 1948 and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard University in 1950. A leader and innovative thinker, he is a member of the advisory council for the Smithsonian National Postal Museum, director of Turn the Page KC, and director of the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C. He is also active in the Envelope Manufacturers Association (EMA), having served as the EMA’s president and member of the executive committee.
Mr. Berkley served in the United States Army as an Infantry Officer in both World War II and in the Korean War. He served in World War II for 42 months, 22 of which were in the Philippines. He served an additional 17 months during the Korean War, 11 of which were in Korea. He received the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star.
In addition to his primary roles, Mr. Berkley is active in civic organizations. He was a director of the Missouri Family and Community Trust, a member of advisory board for the National Parks and Conservation Association, a member of the board of directors for the National Minority Supplier Development Council, and founder of the Local Investment Commission (LINC, based in Kansas City, Missouri, which has nothing to do with stocks and bonds, and everything to do with investing in children and families). He was also president of the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City, president of the Civic Council of Kansas City, president of the board of trustees of the University of Missouri – Kansas City, and a member of the board of directors of the Kansas City Area Health Planning Council. Mr. Berkley’s civic work has allowed him to be recognized and receive awards such as the Community Guardian Award from the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime, the Hugh J. Zimmer Award for Excellence in Urban Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the Adele Hall Spirit of Caring Award from United Way of Greater Kansas City, the Robert H. Meneilly “Stand Up, Speak Out” Award from the Mainstream Coalition, the Distinguished Service to State Government Award from the National Governors Association, and the Mr. Kansas City Award from the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Kansas City.
As he looks toward the future, Mr. Berkley intends to continue his work on the board of directors of Tension Corporation while continuing to work with civic organizations with which he is actively involved.
In recognition of his professional excellence in his field, Mr. Berkley has earned numerous achievements and acknowledgments from prominent industry organizations. Most recently, he was featured in Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in the World.
