Michael A. Alston, director of human capital and development at Department of Medical Assistance Services, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in human capital and development management.

With 27 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Alston has excelled at the Department of Medical Assistance Services as director of human capital and development since 2021 and as operations manager of human resources from 2020 to 2021. In his current role, he oversees 67 employees. He began his career as a supervisory special agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Nicosia, Cyprus from 1996 to 2000. He worked as deputy administrator at the United States Department of Agriculture from 2000 to 2010 and as associate administrator at the same from 2010 to 2019. He contributed to the Office of the Secretary of Agriculture as senior policy advisor in 2017 and as military veterans agricultural liaison from 2017 to 2019. 

Mr. Alston garnered a stellar reputation as assistant director for employment in the classification and compensation programs at Northern Virginia Community College from 2019 to 2020. Before embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at Michigan State University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in social science in 1985. He holds an executive leadership certificate from the Harvard Kennedy School and a certificate as a project management professional.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Alston has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He sponsored the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation’s Annual Cancer Walk and contributed to the Academy for Excellence, the leadership council at the Michigan State University, and was a board member at Germanna Community College and the Fredericksburg Area Museum. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the Senior Executives Association, the Michigan State Alumni Association, and the Project Management Institute.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Alston has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was recognized as a distinguished alumni by Michigan State University in 2019. He attributes his success to cooperation and partnership with others. In the immediate future, his intention is to transition into consulting work and do more in the local community. He wants to help those who are less fortunate and uplift people.
