Michael J. Donohoe, president at Preparedness Plus, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in environmental awareness.

After more than 20 years of service in the U.S. Coast Guard, Mr. Donohoe has established himself in the private sector, leading businesses focused on environmental awareness and safety. In 2024, he founded Preparedness Plus, an organization that helps facilities around the world assess their oil storage in order to avoid spills and have effective responses ready in the event of a spill. Mr. Donohoe utilizes the experience from his time in the Coast Guard, as well as from nearly 30 years of working in environment-focused positions since then. Before starting Preparedness Plus, he served as a senior preparedness instructor for Precision Planning & Simulations Inc. for over a decade. Mr. Donohoe showcased his ability to lead a company as the senior vice president and principal owner of Tioga Environmental Consultants from 2009 to 2012. His earliest roles outside of the military include vice president of environmental services and principal owner of Pickering Environmental Consultants Inc. and senior associate at Corbett & Holt LLC.

Mr. Donohoe built his reputation in the world of oil pollution prevention and response during his time in the U.S. Coast Guard. He joined in 1972 as a lieutenant, junior grade, and was promoted to lieutenant commander, commander and captain. Before retiring from the Coast Guard in 1995, Mr. Donohoe had accepted posts as chief of the Marine Environmental Protection Program and vice chairman of the national response team. His military service was honored with numerous accolades, including the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, five Coast Guard Commendation Medals and a Coast Guard Achievement Medal. Mr. Donohoe was the youngest guardsman ever to be presented with the Captain David H. Jarvis Award for Inspirational Leadership, which he received in 1976 alongside being praised as Coast Guard Officer of the Year. He was twice named Military Member of the Year by the Greater Memphis Chamber.

Before embarking on his military career, Mr. Donohoe set up a solid academic foundation. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Wheeling University in 1971. Following that, Mr. Donohoe earned a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard College in 1983. Devoted to lifelong learning, he has continued his education through many certifications, including in hazardous materials management and in international negotiation from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute. Mr. Donohoe has completed courses in hazardous materials safety, hazardous materials on-scene coordination, hazardous materials response operations, port safety law enforcement and oil pollution response.

In addition to his primary vocation, Mr. Donohoe has been a member of several important organizations relevant to his field. For several years, he served as the chairman of The American National Red Cross’ Mid-South region and the president of the Society of American Engineers. He has also been involved with the Knights of Columbus since 2020, for which he was appointed to the Church of St. Margaret of Scotland Council in 2023. The U.S. government called on Mr. Donohoe to offer his guidance as a representative during the Amoco Cadiz oil spill in 1978. He has also shared his expertise through presentations and writing. Mr. Donohoe published a paper titled “Contingency Plans: A Useful Tool or Bureaucratic Burden” as part of 1981’s Oil Spill Conference.

Mr. Donohoe credits his success to the support of his wife and his ability to focus on understanding and implementing processes in order to achieve the desired outcome. He also notes how important collaboration with others has been, both with fellow Coast Guardsman during his time in the military and with other industry and environmental stakeholders during his later professional life. Mr. Donohoe expresses gratitude toward the many mentors who helped him throughout his life, especially his father, who was also a Coast Guard captain. Outside of his career, he enjoys spending his free time gardening.
