Ron D. Whitney, president and chief executive officer at the International Reciprocal Trade Association, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in global trade.
Backed by more than 30 years of experience in his field, Mr. Whitney has served as the president and chief executive officer of the International Reciprocal Trade Association since 2007. In this role, he focuses on both bringing new members into the organization and facilitating beneficial transactions between existing members. Mr. Whitney helps a wide range of busy members, such as dentists and mechanics, to stay on top of what their membership in the International Reciprocal Trade Association offers. He takes great pride in having turned the organization around from its difficult position when he joined the company. Prior to this, Mr. Whitney had a lengthy tenure as the chief executive officer of Barter Network Inc., a company he founded in 1993. In his early career, he pursued law and insurance, working in such positions as head of real estate and insurance risk manager at Drexel University, law clerk at Prickett, Jones & Elliott, P.A., and claims adjuster at The Hartford.
Mr. Whitney’s success has been made possible by a strong academic foundation. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in political science from The George Washington University in 1976, followed by earning a Juris Doctor in insurance and real estate from the Delaware Law School at Widener University in 1982. Mr. Whitney’s accomplishments at the International Reciprocal Trade Association have been honored with numerous accolades, including the Paul St. Martin Distinguished Service Award, the David Wallach Outstanding Achievement Award and the Legend of Barter Award. He attributes the trajectory of his career to his ability to maintain positive relationships with people and to notice opportunities that others might miss.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Whitney is a dedicated husband and father to two children. He enjoys spending his free time writing short stories, golfing, playing with his dog and studying history. Mr. Whitney is a committed member of the Episcopal Church and has volunteered for The National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In the coming years, he hopes to further refine the trade exchange model used by the International Reciprocal Trade Association, with an emphasis on orienting it around communities. Mr. Whitney envisions expanding the organization to offer services more efficiently to rural areas of the United States. His long-term goal is to teach a widening range of clients about the benefits of his group through efforts such as outreach to local chambers of commerce and comparing organized trade to alternative currencies.
