Kimberly Barrett, MBA, MPS, director of legal operations at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in legal services.
After working her way up in the legal field across nearly 30 years, Ms. Barrett has stepped into the role of director of legal operations at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP. In this executive position, she heads up four units in the company, reporting directly to the chief operations officers. Ms. Barrett increases synergy between these different units and efficiency across the organization as a whole, while making sure that attorneys, department heads and other colleagues have all the resources necessary to do their jobs to a high degree of quality. Prior to her time with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, she served as the director of legal professional and paralegal administration at Latham & Watkins LLP, which she initially joined in 1999 as a senior paralegal. Ms. Barrett’s legal career started in 1997 as a legal secretary with Marino, Tortorella & Boyle P.C. She chose this job as a way to chart a path into the industry without having to attend law school.
Although she did not go to law school, Ms. Barrett has benefited from a strong academic history. She obtained an Associate of Applied Science in paralegal studies from Berkeley College in 1997 before taking a break to start a family and raise her children. In 2009, Ms. Barrett returned to school, completing a Bachelor of Science in justice studies at Montclair State University, followed by a Master of Science in paralegal studies at The George Washington University in 2011. Additionally, she earned a Master of Business Administration from the Pepperdine Graziadio Business School in 2019. Ms. Barrett has continued her education with certification as a discovery practitioner from The Insights Group Limited and in leadership essentials from 9Q Solutions. Before pursuing her academic path, she served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves for five years.
Outside of her career, Ms. Barrett enjoys traveling to new places and reading. Looking to the future, she hopes to become a mentor for fellow first-generation professionals who are at earlier stages of their careers. Ms. Barrett remains passionate about being involved with the law and looks forward to continuing in her role at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP.
