Tomoaki H. Ishii, vice president of project finance at Teralta Hydrogen Solutions Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in energy and engineering.
Growing up in a rural region of Japan, Mr. Ishii found himself frustrated and embarrassed by the poor sanitary environment of his hometown due to a lack of investment in infrastructure. He developed a keen understanding of these issues while working alongside his grandfather to clean septic tanks, collect waste and recycle resources. Since those formative experiences, Mr. Ishii has devoted himself to a career of 15 years focused on improving social infrastructure and introducing clean energy to more people. Currently he serves as the vice president of project finance for Teralta Hydrogen Solutions Inc., a company helping develop and distribute new hydrogen-based energy technology. Mr. Ishii plays a vital role in securing and developing the budget for large-scale hydrogen projects for the company. Among other duties, he negotiates with lenders to ensure that the organization’s goals can be met.
Before joining Teralta Hydrogen Solutions Inc., Mr. Ishii held multiple roles with Itochu Corporation, the largest investment firm in Japan. He joined Itochu Corporation as a project manager and investment officer in 2011, then worked in the same positions at the company’s Europe office based in London. Later, Mr. Ishii was promoted to business development manager. During his time with Itochu Corporation, he led several multimillion-dollar investments into clean energy infrastructure projects with a value of more than $2.5 billion. Additionally, Mr. Ishii contributed for several years as the chief administrative officer of the Macau branch of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.
Mr. Ishii’s success in both finance and clean energy is backed up by a strong academic foundation. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in engineering and applied physics from Waseda University in 2009, followed by a master’s degree in engineering and pure and applied physics from the same institution in 2011. After immigrating to the United States, Mr. Ishii earned a Master of Business Administration in business analytics from the University of Southern California in 2023. He has furthered his credentials by completing certification in human resource professional development from the University of Michigan and in corporate finance, accounting and financial analysis from the London Business School.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Ishii has worked alongside investors, lenders and government officials, becoming an expert in the complex world of public-private partnerships. These efforts have yielded impactful results around the world, including a waste management program in Serbia and multiple waste energy projects in the United Kingdom. Through his work in Serbia, Mr. Ishii established what is considered the largest infrastructure project in the region while supporting his goal of building a more sustainable world. His work has been lauded with such accolades as the IJGlobal Award and the Project Finance International Award.
Beyond his career, Mr. Ishii is a dedicated husband and father to two children. He enjoys spending his free time tinkering with gear parts and motors and learning robotics. Mr. Ishii’s goals for the future remain unchanged: to work toward a clean energy future, in whatever form that takes. He hopes to make a major contribution to the global energy transition away from carbon dioxide-emitting fossil fuels.
