Mr. Gaus, senior vice president and general manager at American Dream, has been active in his role since 2022. Lauded as a premier destination that attracts individuals from all over the country and beyond, it is located in East Rutherford, New Jersey. It is recognized as the second-largest mall in the U.S. The retail and entertainment complex offers numerous shopping, dining, and attractions for people of all ages.
In his leading role, Mr. Gaus manages the complex’s operations and strategic planning, comprising over 3.5 million square feet. He oversees over 250 retailers, 35 dining locations, 30 attractions, and 400 annual events.
Leveraging many years of previous success, Mr. Gaus held notable positions with several other organizations, including as the vice president and general manager for Hudson Yard Retail, a leading locale with over 100 retailers and 25 restaurants, from 2018 to 2022. It was a very noteworthy time in his career and a tremendous honor to be such an influential part of the Hudson Yard ribbon cutting in Manhattan, New York, alongside several prominent business leaders.
Before his success at Hudson Yard, Mr. Gaus served in the same capacity at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (originally Westfield Corporation) in 2018. Between 2005 and 2018, he spent over a decade in several other positions at Westfield Corporation, beginning as a general manager and working his way up to vice president and general manager. Westfield Corporation, originally an Austrian-based commercial real estate company and operator of shopping centers, later became known as Westfield Group in 2014 before being taken over by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield in 2018.
Before pivoting into the hospitality sector, Mr. Gaus spent over a decade with United Airlines Inc., beginning as a customer service representative and then as an operations supervisor, regional finance manager and general manager until 2005. After being invited by his former boss from United to follow him to Westfield Corporation and being offered a position as a general manager at its Westfield Northwest Plaza in Saint Ann, Missouri, Mr. Gaus accepted, despite not having any experience in the retail or development sectors.
Mr. Gaus completed the Westfield Iconic Leadership Program in the Anderson School of Management at the University of California Los Angeles in 2014, which has been instrumental in his professional success. He is also active as a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, which has allowed him to remain at the forefront of his industry while networking with like-minded individuals. Civically invested, Mr. Gaus is active in the Citizens Police Academy and his local chamber of commerce.
During his tenure at Westfield and United Airlines, Mr. Gaus received numerous internal awards, showcasing his hard work and expertise. He credits his lifelong success to several factors, including his parents for instilling hard work, dedication and the importance of respecting others. He also notes several tremendous mentors throughout his career for teaching him valuable lessons and insights. Additionally, Mr. Gaus has been afforded the opportunity to work for remarkable companies and family-owned businesses that value integrity and have enabled him to flourish, particularly Westfield and American Dream.
Mr. Gaus is eager to continue leading his team at American Dream and transform it into another iconic international destination and entertainment retail complex for the Triple Five Group. He also intends to remain dedicated to continuous learning, actively network and mentor young professionals, and focus more on charitable causes.
