In addition to her work at Fischer Hellmann Communications, Ms. Hellmann is lauded as an award-winning author of contemporary crime thrillers and historical fiction, crafting compelling narratives and facilitating the marketing of publications. Having made a name for herself in the literary world, she is the author of 18 novels and 30 short stories, with her first mystery novel published in December 2001. Ms. Hellmann’s second most recent book, “A Bend in the River,” won the Chicago Writers Association Best Indie Fiction Award during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms. Hellmann’s involvement with The Red Herrings Press since 2014 and her role as a host of Second Sunday Books on Authors on the Air until 2020, which can now be heard on podcasts, further attest to her contributions to the field.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Hellmann was affiliated with Allium Press of Chicago and Bleak House Books. She was also a columnist for Women’s Voices Media LLC, Women’s Voices Magazine. Ms. Hellmann’s career began in the realm of broadcast news production from 1972 to 1978, where she honed her skills as a producer across various platforms for NBC, TVN and PBS. This experience laid the foundation for her subsequent role as manager of communications training at Burson-Marsteller between 1978 and 1985.

Ms. Hellmann’s academic background has played a pivotal role in shaping her career. She initially graduated cum laude from the National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington, D.C., in 1967. After high school, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1970 and a Master of Fine Arts in film production from New York University in 1972. These educational achievements have provided Ms. Hellmann with a strong foundation for both her literary pursuits and her initial aspirations in the film industry.

Beyond her primary career objectives, Ms. Hellmann has been an active member of several industry-related organizations. She is a member of Mystery Writers of America, the Society of Midwest Authors and the Chicago Writers Association. She is also a past president of Sisters in Crime. Ms. Hellmann’s civic-minded endeavors included volunteering with Open Books Chicago and supporting the Greater Chicago Food Depository.

Ms. Hellmann attributes her success to her unwavering persistence and the support of mentors throughout her career. Her mother introduced her to mysteries that differ from thrillers in structure and emotional depth, while her author friends and a supportive writers’ group have been instrumental in her learning journey. As she continues to inspire others through her work, Ms. Hellmann remains dedicated to making meaningful contributions to literature and society. She also plans to write at least two more books, bringing her total to 20 published works. Additionally, she is committed to educating others about historical events and laws leading up to World War II through her recent book about the Ritchie Boys.
