Christina J. Zamon, head of special collections and archives at Georgia State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in library science and archives.
While attending college in 1998, Ms. Zamon worked as an archives aide at the National Archives and Records Administration. It was during this formative experience that she first realized she was more interested in working with the maintenance of documents rather than as a researcher. Following this, Ms. Zamon gained experience as a cataloging assistant at The Frick Collection. This opportunity also introduced her to digital archiving, as she focused on retrospective conversion and creating and updating online records for art auction catalogs.
With her career spanning nearly 30 years, Ms. Zamon has contributed as an acquisitions assistant at Folger Shakespeare Library, a graduate assistant in the brittle materials unit at the University of Maryland, an archivist for The National Press Club and adjunct faculty at Simmons University. She has also provided insight as a guest lecturer at Georgia State University and the University of Maryland. Beginning in 2007, Ms. Zamon devoted almost 10 years to her position as head of archives and special collections at Emerson College. While there, she played a key role in the development of the campus’ new Comedic Arts Major and Comedy Center, including assisting with integration of the American Comedy Archives collection into the curriculum for the major.
Since 2016, Ms. Zamon has served as the head of collections and archives at Georgia State University. She handles a wide range of responsibilities, from managing employees to fundraising to keeping track of the budget. Ms. Zamon showcases her expertise in her field as the curator of Georgia State University’s Photographic Collection and its Rare Book Collection, as well as other collections as needed. She is an essential part of the department’s future as well, aiding in strategic planning, program reviews, policy evaluation and more.
Prior to embarking upon her professional journey, Ms. Zamon sought a strong academic foundation to build on. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history with a minor in music performance from the Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania-Bloomsburg (formerly the Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania) in 1999. Subsequently, Ms. Zamon earned a Master of Arts in history and a Master of Library Science from the University of Maryland in 2004. Dedicated to continuous improvement and learning, she has embraced numerous opportunities to keep growing. Ms. Zamon was certified as an archivist from the Academy of Certified Archivists in 2005 and as a digital archives specialist from the Society of American Archivists in 2013. She completed a course at the Archives Leadership Institute at Luther College in 2015 and another at the Leadership Academy for Women Faculty at Georgia State University in 2024.
Known for her scholarly output, Ms. Zamon regularly writes and presents on topics in her field. She is particularly proud of the two books she has authored exploring her experiences as a solo archivist: 2012’s “The Lone Arranger: Succeeding in a Small Repository” and 2024’s “Alone in the Stacks: Succeeding as a Solo Archivist.” Both of these volumes were published by the Society of American Archivists, and Ms. Zamon considers them the highlight of her career. She has been a featured speaker at such events as the Georgia Libraries Conference, the History of Education Society Annual Meeting, the Society of Georgia Archivists Annual Meeting and the West Texas Historical Association Annual Meeting, among others.
Outside of her work in the library science and archival areas, Ms. Zamon is a committed wife and a loving mother to two children: 13-year-old Sienna and 17-year-old Rita. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, composting, playing the double bass, practicing yoga, swimming, knitting and learning new skills. Moving forward, Ms. Zamon is eager to continue building on her established skills by taking on an associate dean position within an academic library. She hopes to eventually become a dean or director of a major academic library as a culmination of her professional path.
