Since 2020, Mr. LaGrange has served as the vice president of philanthropic operations and finance at UnityPoint Health. In this capacity, he coordinates with a dedicated support team to assist a dozen foundations across the organization. Mr. LaGrange’s responsibilities encompass long-term vision and strategy development, detailed execution, compliance oversight and comprehensive reporting. He also maintains full-stack database solutions and manages accounting, finance and investments for the organization. Additionally, Mr. LaGrange collaborates closely with chief financial officers and market presidents to devise forward-thinking financing strategies that align with organizational direction and community engagement.
Among Mr. LaGrange’s most significant achievements at UnityPoint Health was the successful unification of previously independent foundations, a feat that had eluded others despite multiple attempts. Through his leadership, these entities have come together to form a cohesive network, overcoming internal politics and local competition while preserving healthy rivalry. Mr. LaGrange also developed a center for philanthropic operations and finance within UnityPoint Health, further solidifying his impact on the organization’s philanthropic mission.
In 2021, Mr. LaGrange also served as the interim foundation president at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s, providing transitional leadership during a pivotal period for the foundation. Earlier, he excelled as the vice president of finance and operations from 2012 to 2020, where he played an instrumental role in securing approximately $450 million in government grants for the philanthropy sector. Mr. LaGrange initially served as a tax director at UnityPoint Health between 2003 and 2012.
Before joining UnityPoint Health, Mr. LaGrange spent several years with a small startup company in Iowa, where he was involved in light manufacturing and just-in-time inventory solutions. He also gained valuable experience as a manager at Arthur Andersen LLP in Chicago. Mr. LaGrange began his career in 1995 as a senior accountant at Kemper CPA Group LLP, where he honed his foundational skills in accounting and financial analysis.
Mr. LaGrange’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, earned in 1994. He also holds credentials as a certified public accountant and a Lean Six Sigma green belt from the Management and Strategy Institute.
Active in his professional community, Mr. LaGrange is a member of the Society of CPAs and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Civically engaged through volunteer work, he has contributed to the standards committee of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy since 2020 and remains active in philanthropic initiatives within the health care system. Additionally, Mr. LaGrange enjoys coaching his children’s sports teams.
