Wesley Moore III, Retired Teacher at Porter-Gaud School and Author, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Educators for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Private School Education.

Mr. Moore is recognized for his long and successful tenure in education and literature, spanning more than four decades. Most recently, he served as a teacher at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina, for over 30 years, where he also chaired the English department. In these roles, Mr. Moore prepared lessons and wrote assignments, consistently striving to create a classroom environment that was engaging and memorable for students. He quickly became known for his creative teaching methods, including finger puppet shows and theatrical elements, which contributed to his reputation as an entertaining and effective educator.

Recognized as a coeducational independent day school for grades 1-12, Porter-Gaud School has been in existence for more than 150 years. The private school offers a challenging academic environment for students while ensuring a well-rounded educational curriculum as a premier, independent school in the southeastern United States.

Before joining Porter-Gaud School, Mr. Moore taught at the community college level, where he began his teaching career at age 32. He credits one particular mentor who hired him and provided nurturing guidance during his early years as a significant influence on his approach to education.

Mr. Moore’s academic foundation includes a bachelor’s degree in English, earned in 1975. His studies provided the groundwork for his literary pursuits and his innovative approach to teaching.

Beyond his educational career, Mr. Moore became an accomplished author and artist. He has published two novels: “Today, Oh Boy” in 2023 and “Long Ago Last Summer” in 2025. Both works received strong reviews from Carcass Reviews, a respected publication established in 1930 known for its selective praise. Mr. Moore considers this recognition a point of pride. His literary achievements are further underscored by two outstanding reviews from Kirkus Media LLC. A chapter from his first book inspired a short 15-minute art film that premiered at a local Charleston movie theater on September 19, 2025. In addition to his writing, Mr. Moore creates and sells digital graphic collages, further demonstrating his commitment to the arts.

During his teaching years, Mr. Moore was actively engaged with industry-related organizations that supported his work and reflected his commitment to professional development and industry engagement, including the National Council of Teachers of English. Civically, he is a donor to Porter-Gaud School, reflecting his ongoing support for educational initiatives and the community that shaped much of his professional life.

Mr. Moore’s dedication to teaching was acknowledged in 2003 when he received a teacher tribute from Stanford University. Earlier, he was honored with the John E. Gibbs Faculty Award from Porter-Gaud School in 1996.

Reflecting on his professional journey, Mr. Moore has attributed his success in the classroom to his ability to entertain and connect with students, often likening his teaching style to theater. This unique approach was highlighted during a recent interview with Oregon podcaster Nichols Rogers, in which Mr. Moore discussed his book “Long Ago, Last Summer” and performed a poem in the voice of Dr. John, the New Orleans pianist.

Born in Summerville, South Carolina, Mr. Moore has built a fulfilling personal life alongside his professional achievements. He is married, has two children of his own and one stepchild. In his free time, he enjoys writing and creating art. Looking ahead, Mr. Moore intends to continue writing novels that resonate with readers.
