Mr. Mallett, director of field operations at O’Brien and Company, a leading construction firm based in Portland, Oregon, since 2018, has been instrumental in his leading role, currently managing a $10 million project and overseeing the work of other superintendents to ensure the successful execution of complex construction initiatives. Mr. Mallett’s leadership at O’Brien and Company has been marked by a commitment to quality, safety, and mentorship since 2019.
Before being named director, Mr. Mallett spent 2021 and 2022 as the chief of field operations at O’Brien and Company, where he provided strategic oversight for field activities and contributed to the company’s operational excellence. Between 2019 and 2021, he excelled as a senior superintendent at the firm, directing large-scale projects and mentoring emerging leaders. Among Mr. Mallett’s most notable recent projects with O’Brien and Company was a high-end restoration effort involving a 60-year-old library in Astoria, Oregon, designed by the first licensed woman architect.
Recruited from Alegis Construction, Mr. Mallett served as a superintendent in 2019, managing diverse construction projects across the United States. His tenure with Alegis Construction spanned 2013 to 2019, during which he also served as an operations manager and then general manager.
Mr. Mallett’s earlier tenure at SD Deacon from 2006 to 2013 included serving as a superintendent, leading numerous commercial projects in retail spaces, and honing his expertise in large-scale construction management. He came from Polygon Northwest in the Beaverton Hillsdale area of Washington. Mr. Mallett completed 4,000 high-density homes during this time, contributing significantly to regional housing development.
Between 2001 and 2003, Mr. Mallett served as a superintendent for K. Hovnanian Homes in San Diego. He was instrumental in constructing hundreds of high-end second homes and mansions, delivering luxury residences. Earlier, he was a superintendent for Grant General Contractors from 1999 to 2001, successfully managing shopping center projects valued between $30 million and $40 million each and developing retail villages spanning up to 20 acres across the five southernmost counties of California.
Mr. Mallett began his career in construction as a laborer in 1976 while participating in outreach programs during his time at seminary. He was soon acquired by Modoc Contracting and Consulting Firm in 1979, advancing to journeyman level before taking on the role of commercial superintendent in 1990. Mr. Mallett remained with Modoc for over 20 years, until 1997. This foundational experience provided him with a broad understanding of construction operations and set the stage for his future leadership roles.
Mr. Mallett’s educational background includes an Associate of Arts in construction management from Lassen Community College in Susanville, California, earned in 1998. His academic training provided a strong technical foundation that has supported his advancement through increasingly responsible positions in the industry. Mr. Mallett has also pursued professional development through certifications in construction codes (IBC, UBC and IRC) from Portland Community College in Portland, Oregon, and in organizational leadership from Vistage.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mallett has demonstrated a deep commitment to training and mentorship. For more than two decades, he has trained superintendents, successfully guiding over 100 individuals across three companies, beginning with SD Deacon 20 years ago. He has also authored several books designed to help superintendents learn their trade and manage their responsibilities effectively. Mr. Mallett’s dedication extends beyond professional achievements into civic engagement as a donor to various charities.
In light of his success, Mr. Mallett’s work has been recognized with several honors, including Project of the Year from DJC and multiple Best Historical Restoration Project awards. He remains dedicated to inspiring future generations within the industry and removing obstacles that hinder growth. He also aims to continue serving as a resource for others’ success. At this stage of his career, Mr. Mallett is focused on giving back by guiding and supporting those who will shape the future of construction through their own contributions.
