Mr. Newbern has enjoyed a stellar professional journey, one that reflects dedication in telecommunications, information technology and military service, and is marked by technical expertise and a commitment to advancing connectivity. Currently, Mr. Newbern serves as a freelance information technology consultant, a role he began in 2024. In this capacity, he addresses the evolving challenges faced by data centers, leveraging his extensive background to advise clients on energy backup power, batteries, diesel generators, networking and advanced fiber and telecommunications technologies. His responsibilities include checking for consulting opportunities at the start of each week, engaging in client discussions about transpacific and transcontinental fiber systems, and providing guidance on the sales of power systems, base stations and E-Node controllers. Mr. Newbern’s comprehensive knowledge of telecommunications systems and advancements has positioned him as a sought-after expert in the field.

Before his consultancy work, Mr. Newbern retired from AT&T after more than 20 years with the telecommunications company. From 2021 to 2023, he served in his final position as a network services manager within network engineering and operations. In this leadership role, he specialized in remote testing for high-speed fiber circuits in the wireless sector. His work encompassed building and repairing circuits remotely, as well as performing hands-on tasks within central offices, such as running fiber jumpers, performing rack-and-stack operations, and installing and maintaining equipment. Mr. Newbern is most proud of his efforts to maintain connectivity between individuals using the latest technology, a testament to his dedication to ensuring seamless communication in an increasingly digital world.

Before his promotion to manager at AT&T, Mr. Newbern spent 2019 to 2021 as a communication technician in network engineering and operations. He was responsible for supporting critical communication infrastructure and ensuring reliable service delivery across various platforms. Between 2011 and 2019, Mr. Newbern served as a technical associate in the same division.

Earlier roles at AT&T included telecommunication specialist positions in engineering work orders from 2008 to 2011 and in the Circuit Provisioning Center–Loop Assign Center from 2003 to 2008. His initial role began in 2000 as a telecommunication specialist with the special access remote test system and REACT remote testing teams at AT&T, focusing on remote diagnostics and troubleshooting for specialized circuits.

Mr. Newbern’s career began with distinguished service in the U.S. Navy from 1986 to 1997 as an electronics technician specializing in submarines. Holding a top-secret security clearance, he developed advanced skills in electronics while working on sophisticated naval systems. This experience laid the foundation for Mr. Newbern’s later achievements in civilian telecommunications.

Mr. Newbern’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in electronic engineering technology with a minor in industrial automation from Bryant & Stratton College in Cleveland, Ohio, and a Master of Business Administration from Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio. He also holds a Lean Six Sigma green belt certification from Villanova University. These academic achievements have been instrumental in equipping Mr. Newbern with both technical acumen and strategic business insight.

Active in his professional community, Mr. Newbern is a member of the Black Masters of Business Administration and the National Society of Black Engineers, reflecting his commitment to ongoing professional development and community engagement. Beyond his professional endeavors, Mr. Newbern is dedicated to civic engagement through volunteer work with organizations such as TECH CORPS, charitable groups during seasonal initiatives, the Wake County Public School System and local coffee company pop-ups. His commitment to service extends to mentoring youth, sharing the knowledge he has gained over decades with aspiring technologists.

Throughout his career, Mr. Newbern has demonstrated expertise in technical communication, systems simplification, Cisco networking, subnetworking and systems integration, as well as electrical and optical principles, including light and sound velocity analysis. His proficiency in these areas has earned him recognition among peers and industry leaders alike.

In recognition of his contributions to his country, Mr. Newbern has been awarded several honors from the U.S. Navy, including the Navy Achievement Medal, two Good Conduct Awards and recognition under the Personal Reliability Program. He attributes his accomplishments to exposure, inquisitiveness and discipline, all qualities that have driven him since childhood.
