Victor E. Mbaba, president at ACF of Metro Atlanta, Africa’s Children’s Fund, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements and leadership in the Nonprofit Sector.
Mr. Mbaba is lauded for his tenure and expertise in education and nonprofit leadership, most notably as the president of Africa’s Children’s Fund of Metro Atlanta since 1993. Drawing on his expertise as a former schoolteacher, he founded the organization in response to the critical shortage of educational resources he observed during a visit to Nigeria, in contrast to the surplus of books in the Atlanta school system. Recognizing the potential impact of these unused materials, Mr. Mbaba began shipping books to Liberia in 1993, immediately following the end of the civil war that had devastated schools and left students without learning materials. The inaugural shipment included a 40-foot container filled with approximately 30,000 books. This initiative marked the beginning of an ongoing effort to distribute educational resources across Africa, with annual shipments expanding to various countries and ultimately surpassing 3 million books.
Two years later, Mr. Mbaba established Project Excel under Africa’s Children’s Fund to further support students’ academic performance, behavior and conduct. Project Excel partners with school systems in metro Atlanta, providing tutoring, mentoring and after-school and summer programs for students from very low-income families. Among its notable components is the Assembly Hall Program at a Fulton County school, where psychologists, therapists and others who have overcome adversity are invited to speak and inspire students. Mr. Mbaba takes pride in witnessing the individual transformations achieved by students who have participated in these programs.
In 1999, Mr. Mbaba secured grants that enabled the purchase of the organization’s first building, which began serving as housing for families in the metro Atlanta area. In 2001, he started responding to the needs of orphans in Uganda and South Africa by launching the AIDS Orphans Project. This initiative provided feeding programs, grants and scholarships for children affected by HIV/AIDS.
Mr. Mbaba’s commitment to education and humanitarian work has extended beyond book distribution and local programming. He has worked in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, with a ministry to build a school and filmed a documentary during a mission trip to Gambia, where he delivered thousands of dollars’ worth of school supplies to children in need. His efforts were recognized when he was featured in a documentary on the Cable News Network in 2004.
Mr. Mbaba’s academic background has been instrumental in shaping his approach to nonprofit leadership and educational advocacy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Nigeria in Nsukka in 1983, a master’s degree in agricultural business operations from Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama, in 1986, and a second master’s degree in special education and teaching from the University of West Georgia in Carrollton in 1993. These academic achievements provided him with both pedagogical expertise and organizational skills essential for his work.
Throughout his career, Mr. Mbaba has received several honors recognizing his dedication to service and community impact, including the Diet Coke People at Their Best Award from The Coca-Cola Company and the African Diaspora Award. He attributes his success to his faith and trust in God, his religious life and the unwavering support of his family, especially his wife, and his commitment to leading a modest lifestyle focused on meaningful contributions.
Mr. Mbaba remains dedicated to supporting his organization’s mission into the future by continuing to serve in leadership roles and enhancing operational systems for sustainability. Additionally, he plans to author two books, one chronicling more than three decades of work with Africa’s Children’s Fund and another intended as a children’s book. Mr. Mbaba’s legacy is defined by his expertise in education, visionary leadership, and steadfast commitment to improving lives by expanding access to learning resources and supportive programming for vulnerable communities worldwide.
