Additionally, through her Total Schools and Community Involvement program, she delivers staff training that emphasizes holistic wellness for both students and professionals.

In her current role, Ms. Phillips selectively undertakes projects that align with her mission of cultivating healthier communities. She is particularly proud of her work mentoring young authors, a pursuit that intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic when she guided eight children, including two of her grandchildren, through the process of becoming published writers. Ms. Phillips’s approach begins with discussions on wellness and personal branding, preparing participants to become well-rounded individuals and effective communicators.

Ms. Phillips is also the founder of The ICONS Foundation, established in 1996, which reflects her dedication to international nutrition solutions and community involvement. The nonprofit consumer education organization forms partnerships with public and private organizations to promote wellness and healthy lifestyles.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Phillips was the director of food and nutrition services for the Elgin School District U-46 in Elgin, Illinois, from 2009 to 2018. In this capacity, she oversaw comprehensive food service programs, ensuring nutritional standards were met across the district.

Before her role with the school system, Ms. Phillips served as the president of CP Professional Food Services Inc. from 1995 to 2009. Through this consultancy, she assisted clients with food procurement, technical inquiries and communication with manufacturers while writing specifications for school nutrition programs. Ms. Phillips’s expertise was sought by numerous districts, including the Elgin School District, which later recruited her for the directorial position.

Ms. Phillips began her career within the Chicago Public Schools in the early 1980s. She initially joined Curie High School as a teacher after completing student teaching in the Chicago Public Schools system. When home economics was removed from the curriculum in 1997, she transitioned to Peoples Gas Company as a consumer affairs specialist before returning to Chicago Public Schools as a test kitchen supervisor and associate food service director, where she managed menu testing and approval for all city schools and conducted training for supervisors and managers.

Having begun her professional journey at Mutual Trust Life Insurance Company in Chicago, Ms. Phillips worked as a computer operator after excelling in computer studies funded by the company. She developed brochures, flyers and pamphlets while mastering graphic design and typesetting skills that would later inform her work on educational materials.

Ms. Phillips’s academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in home arts and home economics from Chicago State University in 1975 and a master’s degree in education from National Louis University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1985. Her educational achievements have been instrumental in shaping her approach to teaching, administration and consulting.

Throughout her career, Ms. Phillips has been an active member of several industry organizations, including Leadership America, the Illinois School Nutrition Association, the American School Nutrition Association, the School Food Service Association and the Martin Luther King Leadership Organization in DuPage County. Her contributions extend beyond work into authorship. She penned “Knowing Your Heritage Matters: Staying Connected Matters More.”

In light of her success, Ms. Phillips was recognized with an award from the Chatham Business Association. Raised on a farm as the eighth of nine siblings, she credits her early experiences cooking for her family as sparking her interest in the food service industry.

Eager for the future, Ms. Phillips remains dedicated to developing programs that expand knowledge and provide mentorship for individuals seeking personal or professional growth. She aims to be remembered as someone who made a meaningful difference in others’ lives, a legacy inspired by the belief that helping others gives purpose to one’s journey.
