Derek I. Willis, BA, MLS, SLIS, EdS, EdD, Media Specialist at Dekalb County Schools, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in library science.
As a media specialist, Dr. Willis handles a variety of different tasks in his field. He became involved in his line of work as a result of his genuine love for reading. In 1989, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Morehouse College. He proceeded to further his education with a Master of Library Science from Clark Atlanta University and then a Doctor of Education from Argosy University. Moreover, he is a specialist in both liberal science and education leadership.
Another main aspect of Dr. Willis’ adult life is the time he spent in the U.S. Army. He regards his experience serving as a 1st lieutenant to be one of the highlights of his career. Outside of the military, Dr. Willis gained experience as the public library manager for Dekalb County in Decatur, Georgia, from 1991 until 1992. In the following years, he worked at the Marketing Resources Library at Anacomp. In 1994, he was hired as the media specialist for Dekalb County Schools. Dr. Willis remains with the school system today and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1997.
In light of his accomplishments, both inside and outside the military, Dr. Willis has been abundantly lauded. He is a recipient of the Decorated Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Army Reserve Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal, all from the United States Army. Additionally, Best Buy Inc. granted him a teaching grant in 2009, and he was listed in Who’s Who in Education 17 consecutive times. As a further testament to his success, he is featured in multiple editions of Who’s Who in America. In the future, Dr. Willis hopes to be able to transition into the federal government, as he says it supports everybody in the Earthly realm.
